Chapter 12 - Stripping the Fortress Down

While Walter Holbrook was being extracted from the highway wreckage, another synchronized operation was taking place at the St. Jude University Grand Alumni Gala—the most prestigious social event of the academic year.
Over five hundred wealthy donors, trustees, and politicians were gathered in the university’s historic marble ballroom, sipping champagne under glittering crystal chandeliers.
At the podium stood Dean Robert Sterling, Brantley’s uncle, delivering a pompous keynote speech on “Integrity, Leadership, and the Moral Future of Our Youth.”
“Here at St. Jude,” Dean Sterling proclaimed with a self-satisfied grin, “we hold our students to the highest standards of civic virtue. We protect our legacy, we protect our traditions, and we foster an environment of total safety.”
Suddenly, the microphone cut out with a sharp pop.
The opulent chandeliers dimmed, and the massive projection screens behind the stage—intended to display architectural renderings for the new Kensington Science Center—flickered to life.
Dean Sterling tapped the microphone in irritation. “Audio visual team, please check the master feed.”
The screen did not show science centers.
Instead, in crystal-clear, uncompressed 4K resolution, the video of Chad Kensington, Brantley Sterling, and Wyatt Holbrook brutally attacking Chloe Sterling began playing on a massive sixty-foot loop.
Gasps of horror and shrieks of disgust erupted throughout the elegant ballroom. Donors dropped their champagne flutes, watching in sheer disbelief as the horrific assault played out with full, gut-wrenching audio.
Then, the video split into a four-way screen.
The upper-right panel displayed the audio recording of Dean Robert Sterling ordering the campus security director to delete the footage and threaten any student witnesses with immediate expulsion.
The lower panels displayed the bank transfer receipts showing Dean Sterling accepting a $500,000 personal endowment from Eleanor Sterling’s PAC twenty-four hours after the assault.
Dean Sterling’s face turned gray. He grabbed the podium for balance, his hands shaking so violently he knocked over his water glass. “Turn it off! Shut down the main power grid! This is an unauthorized cyber attack!”
From the grand double doors of the ballroom, Agent Sarah Vance entered, flanked by six armed federal agents.
Her voice, amplified through the venue’s sound system courtesy of Julian’s remote override, boomed across the silent room:
“Robert Sterling! Step away from the podium! You are under federal indictment for felony evidence tampering, accessory to aggravated battery, and federal wire fraud!”

Before five hundred of the state’s most influential citizens and dozens of high-society photographers whose flashbulbs went off like strobes, Dean Sterling was pulled away from the podium, forced onto his knees, and handcuffed behind his back.
The illusion of St. Jude’s untouchable elite had been completely, irrevocably shattered before the entire world.
