Chapter 7 - THE LIGHTER IN THE HALLWAY

The flame flared to life, casting dancing orange shadows against the dark hallway walls.

I held the lighter an inch away from the thick, cream-colored paper of the real will.

Vanessa’s eyes widened in genuine horror. She lowered the pistol from Luca’s head.

“Don’t!” Vanessa screamed. Her perfectly cultivated composure shattered completely. “If you burn that, the state takes everything! It gets tied up in probate for a decade!”

“Then let him go,” I demanded, my voice shaking so badly I almost dropped the lighter.

Luca, still kneeling on the floor with his hands bound, stared at me. He didn’t look angry that I had disobeyed his order to stay in the kitchen. He looked terrified for me.

“Claire, get out of here,” Luca ordered, his voice a low, desperate growl. “They’ll kill you.”

“Shut up, Luca,” Vanessa snapped. She took a step toward the doorway, her pistol now aimed at my chest.

“Give me the envelope, Claire,” Vanessa said, trying to sound soothing, though her eyes were wild. “You’re just a housekeeper. You clean toilets. Don’t die for a man who pays you minimum wage.”

“He pays my mother’s mortgage,” I said fiercely. “And he loves his daughter. Which is more than you can understand.”

One of the Russian enforcers stepped forward, raising his assault rifle.

“Enough talking,” the man grunted in a heavy accent. “Shoot her and take the paper.”

Vanessa hesitated. She knew that if I dropped the burning envelope, the paper would catch fire before they could stamp it out.

That hesitation was all the distraction we needed.

From the dark end of the hallway, a massive figure moved with terrifying speed.

It was Daniel.

The head of security, bleeding from his head, tackled the Russian enforcer from behind. The man’s rifle went off, the bullets chewing into the ceiling plaster.

Chaos erupted.

Luca didn’t waste a millisecond. Bound hands or not, he launched himself forward, driving his shoulder directly into the knees of the second guard. The man crumpled with a sickening crunch.

“Shoot him!” Vanessa shrieked, backing away into the bedroom.

The third guard raised his weapon toward Luca.

I didn’t think. I threw the heavy chef’s knife with all my strength.

It wasn’t a perfect throw, but the heavy handle struck the guard square in the jaw. He stumbled backward, his shot going wide and shattering the bedroom window.

Luca rolled to his feet, kicking the dropped pistol out of the guard's hand. He grabbed the man by the throat and slammed him against the mahogany dresser, knocking him unconscious.

Daniel finished choking out the first guard and stood up, panting heavily.

Within thirty seconds, the four heavily armed Russian enforcers were incapacitated on the floor.

Vanessa stood frozen near the shattered window.

She had no guards left. The pistol in her hand was shaking violently.

Luca turned to her. His eyes were completely void of mercy.

“You lost, Vanessa,” Luca said softly.

He took a step toward her.

Vanessa backed up against the broken window frame. The cool night wind whipped her blonde hair across her face.

“I didn’t lose,” Vanessa laughed, a hysterical, manic sound. “I’m not going to prison, Luca. I won’t let you put me in a cage.”

She looked down at the sheer, three-story drop to the stone patio below.

“Don’t do it,” Luca warned, stepping forward.

“Tell Matteo he owes me,” Vanessa sneered.

She leaned backward, ready to fall out the window.

But before gravity could take her, a hand shot out from the shadows of the balcony and grabbed her by the hair, yanking her violently back into the room.

Vanessa screamed, tumbling onto the carpet.

Standing in the broken window frame, breathing heavily and looking completely deranged, was Matteo.

“You’re not escaping that easy, you bitch,” Matteo snarled.

He didn’t look at Luca. He didn’t look at me. He just glared at the woman who had ruined his life.

“You sold my debt to the Russians,” Matteo yelled, kicking the pistol out of her reach. “You told them if I didn’t help you, they could kill me!”

“You owed them!” Vanessa shrieked, scrambling away from him. “I was trying to make us both rich!”

Matteo pulled a small handgun from his jacket and aimed it at Vanessa’s head.

“Matteo, no,” Luca said firmly.

Matteo kept the gun raised. His hands were trembling.

“She ruined everything, Luca,” Matteo wept. “She made me run Claire’s brother off the road. She made me help hide Isabella. She promised me we would just split the money and leave!”

“She manipulated you,” Luca said, his voice unusually gentle. “But if you pull that trigger, you cross a line you can never come back from. Put the gun down.”

Matteo looked at his older brother. The boyish charm was gone, replaced by profound regret.

“I’m sorry, Luca,” Matteo choked out. “I’m so sorry.”

Slowly, Matteo lowered the gun. He dropped it onto the carpet and fell to his knees, burying his face in his hands.

Luca walked over and picked up the gun. He looked at Daniel, who had found a knife to cut the zip ties on Luca’s wrists.

“Call the police,” Luca told Daniel, rubbing his bruised wrists. “Tell them we have the woman who murdered Frank Marino, and she’s ready to confess.”

Vanessa began sobbing hysterically on the floor.

It was over.

Luca turned and walked toward me. He looked at the lighter in my hand, then at the envelope.

He didn’t say a word. He just pulled me into his arms, burying his face in my hair. His massive body shook as the adrenaline finally left him.

“You saved my life,” Luca whispered against my neck.

I closed my eyes, wrapping my arms around him.

“You saved mine first,” I replied softly.

The sound of police sirens wailed in the distance, growing closer.

For the first time in hours, I felt like I could breathe. The nightmare was finally ending.

But as we walked downstairs to meet the police, Isabella stopped us in the foyer.

She was holding a small, black velvet box she had found in Vanessa’s purse.

“Luca,” Isabella said, her face completely pale. “Vanessa wasn’t working alone. She couldn’t have faked my handwriting to steal the money three years ago.”

She opened the velvet box.

Inside sat a heavy, ornate gold ring. The signet ring of a mafia Don.

“That’s our father’s ring,” Luca breathed. “It was buried with him.”

Isabella looked up, tears of pure terror filling her eyes.

May you like

“No, it wasn’t,” she whispered. “Because whoever gave this to Vanessa... is the one who really murdered him.”
