Chapter 12 - THE VOWS IN THE GARDEN

The gardens of the Moretti estate were in full bloom.
Hundreds of white roses lined the stone pathways, and delicate fairy lights hung from the branches of the ancient oak trees.
It was the day of our wedding.
There were no politicians, no rival mob bosses, no bodyguards armed with assault rifles. The guest list was small. Just family, close friends, and the loyal staff who had become our family over the years.
I stood in front of the full-length mirror in the master suite, staring at my reflection.
I wore a simple, elegant white silk gown. My hair was pinned up in a loose twist, and the only jewelry I wore was the vintage diamond ring on my finger.
My mother walked into the room, wiping a tear from her eye.
“You look beautiful, Claire,” she whispered, taking my hands.
“Thank you, Mom,” I smiled, squeezing her hands back.
“If your father could see you now,” she said softly, “he would be so incredibly proud.”
A gentle knock on the door interrupted us.
Isabella stepped inside. She wore a stunning emerald green bridesmaid dress and a wide, genuine smile.
“It’s time,” Isabella announced.
My heart fluttered with nervous excitement.
I walked down the grand staircase, the same stairs I used to scrub on my hands and knees just a year ago.
When I stepped out onto the stone patio, the string quartet began to play a soft, beautiful melody.
The guests stood and turned toward me.
I saw my brother Sam standing near the front, looking handsome in a tailored suit, smiling proudly. I saw Rosa Marino sitting in the second row, dabbing her eyes with a tissue.
And then, I looked at the altar.
Luca stood there, looking absolutely breathtaking in a classic black tuxedo.
When he saw me, his breath visibly caught. A smile broke across his handsome face—a smile so full of pure, unadulterated joy that it made my chest ache.
Standing right beside him, acting as his 'best man', was Mia.
She wore a beautiful white dress that matched mine, and around her neck, gleaming in the sunlight, was the silver locket containing the picture of her mother.
I walked down the aisle, my eyes locked entirely on Luca.
When I reached the altar, Luca took my hands in his. His hands were warm, strong, and incredibly steady.
“You look perfect,” he whispered.
“So do you,” I smiled.
The ceremony was short and beautiful. We didn’t write our own vows. We didn’t need to. The promises we had made to each other in the darkness, when our lives were on the line, were stronger than any words we could say in the light.
“Do you, Luca Moretti, take Claire Bennett to be your lawfully wedded wife?” the officiant asked.
“I do,” Luca said, his voice ringing with absolute certainty. “With my entire soul.”
“And do you, Claire Bennett, take Luca Moretti to be your lawfully wedded husband?”
I looked into the eyes of the man who had surrendered an empire just to build a home with me.
“I do,” I said clearly.
“Then by the power vested in me, I pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.”
Luca didn’t hesitate. He pulled me into his arms and kissed me with a passionate, overwhelming love that made the entire crowd erupt into cheers and applause.
Mia cheered the loudest, jumping up and down.
Luca pulled away, laughing, and scooped Mia into his arms, holding her between us as we turned to face our family.
The reception was a joyous, chaotic celebration. We danced under the stars. We drank champagne that didn’t taste like fear or obligation.
Late in the evening, when the guests were busy dancing, Luca took my hand and led me away from the noise, toward the quiet edge of the gardens near the greenhouse.
The night air was warm.
Luca pulled me against his chest, wrapping his arms around my waist. We stood in silence for a moment, just listening to the distant music and the sound of the crickets.
“Are you happy, Mrs. Moretti?” Luca whispered against my ear.
I leaned my head back against his shoulder, looking up at the stars.
The monsters were gone. The secrets were buried. The past had finally been laid to rest.
“I’ve never been happier in my entire life,” I replied softly.
Luca turned me around in his arms. He looked down at me, the moonlight catching the profound peace in his dark eyes.
“I told you once that I wanted to build a real home,” Luca said.
He rested his hand gently against my cheek.
“I was wrong.”
I frowned slightly, confused. “Wrong?”
He smiled, leaning down to press a soft kiss to my lips.
“You are my home, Claire,” Luca whispered. “You always have been.”
May you like
I smiled against his lips, knowing with absolute certainty that no matter what the future held, we would face it together.
In the light.
