Chapter 9 - The Confession in the Dark

The smoke had cleared by the time Falcone’s cleanup crew secured the mansion.

Marcus Vance and his surviving mercenaries were dragged away into the night, bound for federal interrogation cells from which they would never return.

The power had been restored, bathing the library in a warm, steady golden glow.

I sat on the edge of the leather sofa, staring blankly at my hands, still trembling from the adrenaline rush of firing a gun.

Footsteps approached softly.

Augustus sat down beside me on the sofa.

He reached out, taking my shaking hands in his warm, steady palms.

“Are you hurt?” he asked softly.

“No,” I whispered, shaking my head. “Just... shaking.”

“It’s normal,” he murmured, his thumb gently stroking my knuckles. “You were forced into a world of violence because of my name, Delaney. I promised to protect you, and yet you had to save me.”

“I saved us,” I corrected softly, looking up into his gray eyes. “I’m not a fragile little doll, Augustus. My father taught me how to survive before he died. And you taught me how to fight back.”

Falcone stared at me, his gaze softening into something so profound, so intensely vulnerable, that it took my breath away.

“I never planned on letting anyone close to me,” Falcone confessed quietly, his voice barely above a whisper. “In my world, attachment is a weakness. It’s a target painted on your back.”

He reached up, cupping my cheek with his warm palm.

“From the moment I saw you standing on that auction stage,” he continued, “every rule I lived by shattered into dust. I didn't just buy you, Delaney. I fell in love with you before I even knew your name.”

My heart stopped.

The silence in the grand library stretched, heavy and electric.

“Augustus...” I whispered, my voice trembling.

“I know,” he murmured, leaning closer. “You’ve been through hell, and you owe me nothing. But I need you to know the truth.”

I didn't answer with words.

Instead, I reached up, placing my hand on the back of his neck, and pulled him the rest of the way to me.

Our lips met in a slow, tender kiss that washed away every shadow, every fear, and every piece of the broken past we both carried.

It wasn't a transaction.

It wasn't rescue.

May you like

It was surrender.
