Chapter 4 - THE CHILD'S DRAWING

I stared at Lauren, unable to process the sheer magnitude of the lie.

"An arrangement?" I repeated, the word tasting like ash in my mouth.

Lauren shrank back, wrapping her arms around her ruined champagne dress. The hotel lights illuminated a dark, purple bruise blossoming on her forearm.

"He said we were all going to be a family tonight," Lauren sobbed, looking at Daniel with absolute disgust. "He said you were announcing the divorce at the gala. That you were giving us your blessing."

Daniel laughed. It was a hollow, manic sound. He looked between the two of us, finally dropping the mask of the successful, charming CEO.

"Oh, shut up, Lauren," Daniel sneered, his voice dripping with venom. "You didn't care about a blessing. You cared about the trust fund I promised Leo."

Ellie stood on the sidewalk, clutching her little silver bag. She looked at the birth certificate in my hand, reading the words. I saw the exact moment my daughter’s heart broke. The realization that her father hadn't just replaced me—he had replaced her.

"You have a son?" Ellie asked, her voice small and fractured.

Daniel had the audacity to look annoyed. "Ellie, it's complicated. You're too young to understand how lonely a marriage can get."

I wanted to hit him. I wanted to scream. But my mother’s voice echoed in my head. Don't cry for him, Sarah. Fight him.

I looked at the birth certificate again. Something didn't make sense. "Daniel, you didn't have the money for a second family five years ago. We were barely breaking even. How did you pay for a house, hospital bills, and a trust fund?"

Lauren wiped her nose, glaring at him. "Tell her, Daniel. Tell her where the Willow Creek money really went."

Daniel lunged at Lauren, grabbing her by the shoulders. "Keep your mouth shut!"

"Hey!" A deep voice boomed from the hotel entrance.

Marcus, Daniel’s old foreman and our original business partner, was walking down the steps. Marcus was a massive man with calloused hands who had quit three years ago after a bitter dispute with Daniel. I hadn't seen him since.

Marcus stepped between Daniel and Lauren, shoving my husband back effortlessly. "You lay hands on a woman again, Dan, and I'll break your jaw right here on Michigan Avenue."

Daniel straightened his torn jacket, trying to regain his dignity. "This is a private family matter, Marcus."

"Not anymore," Marcus said gruffly. He looked at me, his eyes full of pity. "Sarah, you need to look inside Lauren's purse."

Lauren didn't fight it. She reached into her clutch and pulled out a piece of folded, heavy parchment paper. She handed it to me.

It was a property deed. The deed to Willow Creek—the two hundred acres of prime real estate that was supposed to secure our company's future for the next decade. The land I had mortgaged our own home to help purchase.

But my name wasn't on the deed. Neither was Daniel's.

The owner of Willow Creek was listed as Leo Mitchell Harrison. A five-year-old boy.

"He transferred the company's biggest asset to his illegitimate son," Marcus explained quietly. "He did it three weeks ago. Tomorrow morning, he was going to declare Harrison Custom Homes bankrupt. You were going to take the fall for the debt, Sarah, because your name is on all the bank loans."

The betrayal was so deep it felt physical, like a knife twisting in my ribs. He wasn't just leaving me. He was destroying me, burying me in millions of dollars of debt, while he walked away with our fortune under his secret son's name.

Daniel smirked, realizing the secret was out. He looked entirely unbothered.

"It's business, Sarah," he said coldly. "You were always too emotional. You didn't have the stomach for the big leagues. I'm securing my legacy."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out his keys. "I'm leaving. And there's nothing you can do to stop me. The transfer is legal."

He turned to walk down the street, abandoning his car, leaving Lauren, Ellie, and me standing on the curb.

But as he took his first step, Lauren reached into her purse again.

"He's right," Lauren said quietly. "The transfer is legal." She pulled out a small, jagged piece of metal. It looked like half of a broken key. "But he can't access the trust without the authenticator."

May you like

Daniel stopped dead in his tracks. He turned around, his face completely pale. "Lauren. Give that to me."

"No," she whispered. She held the broken key out to me. "I'm so sorry, Sarah. I didn't know he was ruining you."
