THE PEARLS AND THE PROMISE / Chapter 1 / 8

Chapter 2 - THE GHOST ON THE SCREEN

The enormous screen above the stage suddenly went black.

The ballroom, buzzing with three hundred of Chicago’s most influential people, fell into a confused silence. The soft clinking of champagne glasses stopped. At the head table, Daniel’s hand froze mid-air, inches from Lauren’s waist.

Then, a familiar scratching sound echoed through the state-of-the-art speakers. It was the sound of a home video starting.

The screen flickered to life, and the breath left my lungs.

It was my mother.

She was sitting in our sunroom, wrapped in her favorite yellow cardigan. She looked fragile, her skin pale from the treatments, but her eyes were sharp. The timestamp in the corner read four years ago—just two weeks before she passed away.

"Is it recording, Ellie-bear?" my mother’s voice filled the cavernous room.

Off-camera, a nine-year-old Ellie whispered, "Yes, Grandma. The red light is blinking."

My mother smiled softly into the lens. Then, she lifted her frail hands. Resting across her palms was the pearl necklace.

"Sarah, my beautiful daughter," my mother said to the camera, her voice echoing off the marble pillars of the Grand Palmer Hotel. "If you are seeing this, it means I am gone. And it means Ellie is old enough to understand the truth about these pearls."

On stage, Daniel’s face drained of all color. He took a step toward the AV booth, but the event coordinator crossed her arms, standing firmly between him and the laptop.

"My father bought these for me," my mother’s recorded voice continued. "He worked double shifts at the tire factory for three years. There is a tiny, gray birthmark on the pearl closest to the silver clasp. They are not just jewelry, Sarah. They are a promise that a man will bleed for the woman he loves."

A collective gasp rippled through the ballroom.

Every eye in the room shifted to Lauren. The young, beautiful mistress instinctively reached up, her manicured fingers clutching the pearl closest to the clasp. Even from fifty feet away, I could see her thumb brush against the undeniable gray mark.

Lauren looked at Daniel, her eyes wide with sudden, humiliating terror.

But my mother wasn’t finished. The video zoomed in slightly.

"I am giving these to Ellie," my mother said, her tone shifting from warm to cold iron. "Because I know Daniel will try to take them. Just like he takes everything."

The ballroom was so quiet you could hear the air conditioning humming.

"Sarah," the giant projection of my mother leaned closer to the camera. "If Ellie is playing this video in public, it means Daniel finally did what I always knew he would. It means he broke our family."

Daniel’s jaw clenched. He abandoned his charming persona entirely. "Turn it off!" he barked, his voice cracking into the microphone still clipped to his lapel. "My mother-in-law was heavily medicated! Turn it off now!"

But the video kept playing.

"Don't cry for him, Sarah," my mother said. "Fight him. When this video ends, I need you to go to his golf bag. Slice open the bottom lining of the front pocket. I hid the envelope there. I found what he’s been doing with the Willow Creek money."

Daniel let out a guttural sound of pure panic.

He lunged toward the AV booth. He tripped over the microphone cord, ripping it from the podium. The feedback screamed through the speakers, a high-pitched squeal that made the guests cover their ears.

As Daniel scrambled up, his elbow caught Lauren’s arm. She stumbled backward, her high heel catching the edge of the stage.

Lauren fell hard against the podium. The delicate silver clasp of my mother’s necklace snapped.

Dozens of luminous pearls shattered across the stage, bouncing down the wooden steps and rolling into the shadows.

"My pearls!" Ellie cried out, her voice breaking.

Daniel didn't help Lauren up. He didn't look at his daughter. He just stared at me with a look of terrifying desperation.

"Sarah," he breathed. "Don't you dare go to the car."
