Chapter 15 - The Ring That Belonged on My Finger

Later that night, after the guests had departed and the mansion was quiet once more, Matteo led me out onto the private balcony overlooking Lake Michigan.
The city lights sparkled across the water like a blanket of diamonds.
The cool breeze played with my silver dress, but I didn't feel cold at all wrapped in Matteo’s warmth.
He turned me to face him, taking both of my hands in his.
“Claire,” he said softly.
“Yes, Matteo?”
“When you first walked into this house ten months ago, you kept your head down. You did your work with quiet grace. But I saw you. I saw how you treated my mother with genuine kindness when Alessandra wouldn't even spare her five minutes.”
He reached into his tuxedo jacket and pulled out a small black velvet box.
My breath hitched in my throat.
Matteo slowly dropped to one knee before me.
He opened the box to reveal a breathtaking, flawless seven-carat emerald-cut diamond ring, surrounded by a delicate halo of sapphire stones—the traditional heirloom of the Romano matriarch.
“This ring belonged to my grandmother,” Matteo whispered, his voice trembling with deep, unyielding love. “It was meant for the woman who would rule this house not with fear, but with grace, fierce loyalty, and an unbreakable heart.”
Tears of pure happiness spilled over my eyelashes and rolled down my cheeks.
“Claire Miller, will you do me the greatest honor of my life? Will you marry me and become the queen of my heart and the lady of the Romano family?”
I didn't hesitate for a single second.
“Yes,” I cried softly, smiling through my tears. “Yes, Matteo! A thousand times yes!”
Matteo smiled, slipping the magnificent ring onto my finger.
It fit perfectly, as if it had been forged just for me.
He stood up, wrapped his strong arms around my waist, and lifted me off my feet, spinning me around beneath the starlit sky before crashing his lips onto mine.
From that moment on, I was no longer the invisible maid who scrubbed the floors.
I was Claire Romano.
