Chapter 14 - Justice in the Shadow of the Empire

Matteo stood at the head of the grand banquet table, raising a crystal glass of vintage champagne.

The room fell into reverent silence.

“Two years ago,” Matteo’s deep voice resonated through the hall, “darkness entered this house. My father, Carmine Romano, was taken from us by greed and cowardice.”

He looked around the room, making eye contact with every loyal ally present.

“Those who betrayed us thought that power comes from deceit. They thought loyalty could be bought with blood money. But they were wrong.”

He turned toward his mother, who smiled at him with tears of pride in her eyes.

“My mother is alive today because of one person.”

Matteo turned his gaze directly to me.

He reached out his hand, inviting me to stand beside him at the head of the table.

I stepped up, my heart pounding with overwhelming emotion.

“Claire Miller saw the danger when everyone else was blind,” Matteo proclaimed to the entire assembly. “She risked her life, her future, and her safety to protect my family. She proved that true nobility is not inherited—it is earned through courage, honor, and love.”

The entire ballroom erupted into thunderous applause, raising their glasses in tribute.

For the first time in my life, I felt truly seen, cherished, and valued.
