Chapter 11 - The Sacrifice And The Necklace

The assassin leveled the suppressed pistol directly at my chest.

Everything seemed to happen in slow motion. I saw the man’s finger tighten on the trigger. I heard my father scream my name from the passenger seat of the Mercedes.

But before the gun could fire, a massive force hit me from the side, knocking me violently to the cold cobblestones.

A sharp, muted thwip echoed in the night air.

I hit the ground hard, scraping my palms, but I wasn’t shot. I looked up.

Ray had thrown himself out of the driver’s seat and tackled me out of the line of fire. He was lying next to me, clutching his shoulder, his teeth gritted in pain.

“Ray!” I gasped.

The assassin cursed, adjusting his aim to finish us off.

But he never got the chance.

Two deafening gunshots shattered the quiet night. They didn’t come from the assassin’s suppressed weapon. They came from the shadows of the mansion.

The assassin’s chest blossomed with dark red blood. He staggered backward, his gun dropping to the pavement, before collapsing against the wrought-iron service gate.

I turned my head.

Luca was standing on the back terrace, his handgun raised, smoke curling from the barrel. His chest was heaving, his eyes burning with a lethal, protective fury.

He didn’t lower the gun until Marco and three guards ran out to secure the assassin’s body. Only then did Luca sprint down the stone steps toward us.

“Nora!” Luca dropped to his knees beside me, his hands gently checking my face, my arms, searching for blood. “Are you hurt? Talk to me!”

“I’m okay,” I breathed, still in shock. “Ray… Ray pushed me.”

Luca looked at his driver. Ray was sitting up, applying pressure to a grazing bullet wound on his upper arm. He was bleeding, but it wasn't fatal.

“You saved her life, Ray,” Luca said, his voice thick with gratitude. “You saved my whole world.”

Ray managed a weak smile. “Just doing my job, Boss.”

The medical team rushed out, helping Ray to his feet and guiding him back into the house.

My father had scrambled out of the car and was kneeling on the ground next to me, weeping openly. “I’m sorry, Nora. I’m so sorry. I should have never brought this danger to you.”

I sat up and wrapped my arms around his frail shoulders. “It’s okay, Dad. It’s over.”

Luca stood up, looking down at my father. He had heard everything my father had confessed before the assassin arrived. The truth about his mother. The truth about his father’s brutality.

“Thomas,” Luca said quietly.

My father flinched, looking up at the son of the man who had ruined his life.

“I didn’t know,” Luca said, his voice breaking. The formidable Mafia boss looked incredibly vulnerable in the pale moonlight. “I was seven. I thought my father was a god. I didn’t know what he was doing to her.”

“She loved you, Luca,” my father said softly. “Every day we planned our escape, she cried because she couldn’t figure out how to take you with us safely. She died trying to protect you.”

Luca closed his eyes, a single tear escaping down his cheek. He took a deep, shuddering breath, burying the ghost of his mother once and for all.

He looked at my father. “Dominic’s men know about the ledgers. They know about Geneva. The syndicate will never stop hunting you.”

“I know,” my father said in defeat.

“Which is why,” Luca said, his eyes hardening with a new, fierce resolve, “tomorrow morning, I am handing the original ledgers over to the FBI.”

My father’s jaw dropped. “Luca, if you do that, it won’t just destroy Dominic’s family. It will destroy yours. Your father’s legacy. Your entire empire.”

“My empire was built on my mother’s blood,” Luca said coldly. “I don’t want it anymore.”

He looked down at me, offering his hand. I took it, and he pulled me to my feet, pulling me flush against his chest.

“I’m done being a boss,” Luca whispered, resting his forehead against mine. “I just want to be a man. A man who takes care of his niece. And a man who loves the woman standing in front of him.”

My heart swelled, tears of pure relief spilling over my eyelashes. “You mean it? You’re walking away?”

“I have enough legitimate shipping businesses to keep us comfortable for ten lifetimes,” Luca smiled, brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear. “We’re moving to the lake house. You, me, Lily, and your father. It’s over, Nora.”

I threw my arms around his neck, kissing him deeply. For the first time in my life, I wasn’t looking over my shoulder. I was finally, truly safe.

But as we broke apart, Marco cleared his throat awkwardly from the terrace.

“Boss,” Marco said, holding up a small velvet box. “We found this on the assassin’s body. I think Dominic sent it as a final message before he was captured.”

Luca’s expression darkened. He stepped away from me and walked over to Marco, taking the box.

He opened it.

I braced myself for a severed finger, a threat, a bomb.

Instead, Luca let out a sharp gasp.

He reached into the velvet box and pulled out a necklace.

It was a delicate gold chain, holding a massive, flawless emerald pendant.

“What is it?” I asked, stepping closer.

“It’s the Moretti Emerald,” Luca whispered, staring at the jewel in absolute shock. “It’s the signet piece of the Chicago syndicate. Whoever holds this necklace holds the seat on the Commission.”

“Why would Dominic’s assassin have it?” my father asked, confused.

Luca turned the pendant over. Engraved on the back of the gold setting was a fresh, crisp inscription.

Luca read it aloud, his voice echoing in the quiet courtyard.

May you like

To the new boss of Chicago. Nora Reed.
