Chapter 8 - THE FEDERAL PLAZA SHOWDOWN

The plaza outside the federal courthouse in downtown Boston was a sea of flashing camera lights and shouting reporters.

Microphones thrust into the cold air like a forest of metal stalks.

Dante Moretti stepped out of the black armored SUV, flanked by two federal attorneys and Abel.

He wore a dark charcoal overcoat, his dark hair ruffled by the harbor wind, his face an impenetrable mask of absolute calm.

Flashbulbs popped continuously, turning the night into a stroboscopic nightmare.

"Mr. Moretti! Is it true your engagement to Vanessa Bennett was a setup?"

"Mr. Moretti! Did you orchestrate the arrest of your future father-in-law?"

"Do you deny that Moretti Holdings profited from the south side land clearances?"

Dante didn't stop walking.

He didn't answer a single question.

He walked straight toward the marble steps of the courthouse, his long stride eating up the distance, his eyes fixed on the massive oak doors ahead.

Then, a shrill, hysterical voice cut through the roar of the crowd.

"He's a murderer!"

Dante stopped on the third step.

The reporters spun around instantly, cameras whirling like mechanical birds of prey.

Standing near the base of the steps, wrapped in an expensive fur coat with her hair wildly disheveled, was Vanessa Bennett.

Her mascara was running down her cheeks. In her right hand, she brandished a sheaf of legal papers like a weapon.

"He framed my father!" Vanessa shrieked, pointing a trembling finger directly at Dante. "He used forged documents to steal our shipping lines! He's a criminal hiding behind a federal immunity deal!"

The press corps erupted into a frenzy of shouted questions and camera clicks.

Dante turned slowly on the stone step.

He looked down at Vanessa with an expression of profound, chilling pity.

"Your father signed his own confession the night he wired four million dollars to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands, Vanessa," Dante said, his deep, resonant voice carrying clearly over every microphone in the plaza. "The federal prosecutor has the bank records. The grand jury has the witness testimony. The only thing you're defending right now is a legacy built on ash and blood."

Vanessa lunged forward, her face twisted in pure, unadulterated hatred.

"I'll destroy you!" she screamed, security guards intercepting her before she could reach the steps. "You and your little whore of a maid! I know about her! I know she was in your study tonight!"

Dante’s eyes narrowed.

The temperature on those stone steps seemed to drop ten degrees.

"If you ever mention her name again," Dante said, his voice dropping into a register that made even the seasoned reporters step back in terror, "I will personally see to it that every dime the Bennett family ever stole is seized by the treasury, leaving you with nothing more than the clothes on your back."

Vanessa froze.

The venom died in her throat as she looked into his eyes and realized, with absolute certainty, that he meant every single word.

Dante turned away from her, walked up the remaining steps, and pushed open the heavy courthouse doors.
