Chapter 5 - THE KNOCK AT THE DOOR

Before Elena could process the staggering weight of his words, a sharp, urgent knock rattled the heavy oak door of the study.

Bang. Bang. Bang.

Dante’s hand dropped from her face instantly.

His posture snapped into rigid, lethal alertness.

"Boss," a muffled voice called from the hallway—Abel, Dante’s elderly head of security and longtime confidant. "We have a breach at the East Gate. Federal marshals accompanied by state troopers. They have a warrant."

Dante didn't panic.

He didn't even raise his voice.

"A warrant for what?" Dante called out, stepping toward the door.

"For Richard Bennett," Abel shouted back through the wood. "They're moving in to arrest him right now in the middle of the ballroom. But... that's not all, sir. Bennett's lawyers just served an injunction freezing Moretti Holdings' primary bank accounts, claiming we're co-conspirators in the south side land fraud."

Dante’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure ice.

"They moved faster than anticipated," Dante muttered. He turned back to look at Elena, who stood frozen by the desk.

"Mr. Moretti," she whispered, panic surging in her chest. "If the federal marshals are here, and they search this study—if they find your files on Bennett—"

"They won't find anything," Dante interrupted, walking swiftly to the bookshelf behind his desk.

He pressed his palm against a hidden biometric panel disguised as the spine of an antique leather volume.

A section of the mahogany bookshelf clicked and swung outward, revealing a concealed wall safe lined with steel.

Dante reached inside, pulled out a second, thinner folder containing the original wire-transfer receipts, and shoved them into the inside pocket of his dinner jacket.

"Elena," Dante said, grabbing her by the shoulders, his gray eyes locking onto hers with absolute command. "Listen to me very carefully. You are going to walk out the private service exit through the garden. Abel is waiting by the black sedan. He will take you to a secure townhouse in Cambridge."

"I'm not leaving you here to take the blame for this!" Elena protested, gripping his lapels. "They'll try to pin the arson on you!"

"They can't pin anything on me legally without the primary server data," Dante said, his voice urgent. "Which is currently uploading to an encrypted cloud drive that finishes in four minutes. Once it hits one hundred percent, Bennett's entire empire vanishes."

He leaned down quickly.

Before Elena could pull away, his lips brushed against her forehead—a swift, desperate kiss that felt like a promise written in fire.

"Go, Elena," Dante commanded, pulling the study door open. "Trust me."
