Chapter 4 - The Black-Tie Gala Where Champagne Flowed And Poison Hid In Every Smiled Translation

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a glittering sea of old money, high-level political corruption, and international power brokers. Crystal chandeliers cast golden light across hundreds of guests dressed in black tuxedos and designer evening gowns.

To the outside world, this was the annual International Maritime Logistics Gala.

To the people inside the room, it was neutral territory where rival syndicates negotiated territory, washed billions in illicit capital, and decided who lived to see the next fiscal quarter.

I stood at Dominic Pierce’s right side, wearing an emerald-green silk backless gown that Dominic had personally ordered to my hotel suite earlier that afternoon. The dress hugged every curve with lethal elegance, slit high on the left leg to allow for rapid movement if things went sideways. A tiny, encrypted wireless earpiece was hidden beneath my swept-up dark hair, feeding real-time audio feeds from our surveillance van parked three blocks away.

Dominic looked devastating in a classic black tuxedo, his broad frame and raw, dangerous magnetism drawing the eyes of half the women—and the cautious glares of every powerful man—in the room.

"Stay within arm's reach," Dominic murmured into my ear, his hand casually resting against the small of my back. The warmth of his palm seeped through the thin silk of my dress, sending an electric jolt straight down my spine. "Victor is arriving with Yuri Volkov’s chief lieutenant, Mikhail. Mikhail doesn't speak a word of English, and he prides himself on butchering people who misinterpret his intentions."

"I am familiar with Mikhail Volkov’s file," I whispered back, taking a sip of sparkling water from my flute. "He’s paranoid, prone to violent outbursts when insulted, and he uses archaic Russian idioms to confuse foreign translators."

Dominic glanced down at me, a crooked smirk playing on his lips. "God, you're magnificent when you're being lethal."

Before I could retort, the double doors at the far end of the ballroom opened, and the room’s ambient hum dropped by half.

Victor strode into the room, flanked by Natalia and a broad-shouldered, scarred man with cold, dead eyes and a shaved head—Mikhail Volkov.

"Dominic," Victor greeted, stepping forward and clasping Dominic’s forearm in a traditional underworld grip. "I see you brought your new head of communications."

Mikhail stepped forward, his cold eyes scanning me from head to toe with blatant disrespect. He spat a phrase in rapid Russian: “Dominic brings a decorative whore to a meeting of wolves. Let us see if she has a brain or merely pretty legs.”

Dominic’s fingers on my back instantly tightened into iron. Even without fully understanding the rapid dialect, Dominic recognized the insolent tone. His jaw clenched, and his shoulders shifted into a combat-ready posture.

I placed a gentle, calming hand on Dominic’s forearm, stepping slightly forward before Dominic could pull a weapon in the middle of a crowded ballroom.

I looked Mikhail dead in the eye and spoke in razor-sharp, aristocratic Russian: “A wolf who mistakes a hawk for a songbird usually dies with his eyes plucked out, Mikhail Petrovich. If you wish to discuss maritime routes through the Black Sea, speak business. If you wish to insult the host, step outside into the rain where your blood won’t ruin the Plaza’s Persian rugs.”

Mikhail’s breath hitched. His jaw dropped.

Victor broke into a quiet, appreciative chuckle, while Natalia’s green eyes flashed with intense admiration.

“She speaks well,” Mikhail grumbled in Russian, recovering his composure though a dangerous glint remained in his eyes. “Tell your master that the shipment arriving in Odesa next Tuesday must be cleared without customs inspection. If his ships refuse to carry our sealed containers, we will burn his fleet in the harbor.”

I translated the demand to Dominic in calm, precise English, stripping away the bluster and delivering the raw tactical threat.

Dominic’s eyes darkened to charcoal. He stepped forward until he was towering over Mikhail, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet growl that needed no translation:

"Tell him," Dominic said, looking directly at me without breaking eye contact with Mikhail, "that my ships carry what I approve, when I approve it. And if a single match is struck near my fleet in Odesa, I will have his entire bloodline extracted from Moscow and handed over to the Hague in steel cages."

I translated Dominic’s words into cold, unyielding Russian, matching his cadence and venom with absolute precision.

Mikhail took a half-step back, realization dawning on him that Dominic wasn't a corporate pushover trying to play mafia—he was an apex predator who had just marked his territory.

Natalia stepped forward, offering Dominic a glass of champagne. "A toast," she said smoothly in English. "To dangerous partnerships and the women who keep us from killing each other too quickly."

As Dominic raised his glass, Natalia’s eyes flickered toward me, flashing a hidden, desperate signal.

Beneath the stem of her champagne flute, folded into a microscopic square, was a handwritten note.

As our glasses touched in the toast, Natalia dropped the tiny paper directly into my open palm with the dexterity of a seasoned intelligence operative.

The game had just begun.
