Chapter 14 - Burning The Blood Debts And Walking Free From The Shadow Of The Underworld

Three days later, on a quiet, crisp Sunday morning, Dominic and I drove out to the peaceful countryside of upstate New York.
We stood on the crest of a green, rolling hill overlooking a serene valley where the Thomas Vance Memorial Cancer Research Center was already breaking ground.
In my hands, I held a thick manila folder containing the original promissory notes, the predatory hospital liens, and the fraudulent debt instruments that had kept me trapped in fear and poverty for so many agonizing years.
Dominic stood beside me, wearing a simple wool coat, his sling removed as his shoulder healed rapidly under top-tier medical care. He pulled out a sleek silver lighter and clicked the flame to life.
"Do the honors, my love," Dominic said softly.
I held the corner of the heavy documents over the golden flame.
The paper caught fire instantly, the orange embers eating through the signatures, the legal threats, and the painful memories of sleepless nights and endless despair.
I dropped the burning papers into a small steel brazier on the grass, watching the black ash rise into the clear blue sky, carried away by the autumn breeze.
"How does it feel?" Dominic asked, wrapping his arms around me from behind, resting his chin gently against my head.
"It feels like I can finally breathe," I answered, leaning back against his broad, solid chest, watching the smoke vanish into the horizon.

"Your father would be so damn proud of you, Elena," Dominic whispered into my hair, his voice thick with emotion. "You took on the most dangerous men in the world and you never lost your soul."
"I found you, Dominic," I said, turning in his embrace to look up into the face of the man who had given up everything to stand by my side. "That was the greatest victory of all."
