Chapter 5 - The Siege at Children’s MemorialThree days later, the autumn wind howled across Lake Michigan, driving freezing rain against the glass windows of Children’s Memorial Hospital.

Little Lily Reed was sitting up in her hospital bed, coloring a picture of a blue dinosaur, while her mother sat beside her, reading a stack of administrative reports for the Carver estate.
For the first time in years, Emma’s shoulders weren't tight with tension. The medical debt was gone. Lily’s insulin pump was fully stocked. Her apartment lease had been renewed for two years.
The door to the private hospital suite clicked open.
Marcus Dane stepped inside, wearing a dark trench coat dripping with rain. His hand was tucked inside his coat, resting near his sidearm.
Emma looked up instantly, her maternal instincts flaring. “Marcus? What’s wrong?”
“Pack your things,” Marcus said, his voice clipped and urgent. “We’re moving you and Lily to a secure safehouse immediately.”
“What? Why?” Emma stood up, her heart hammering against her ribs. “Is it... is it the police? Did someone find out—”
“It’s not the police,” Marcus interrupted, stepping to the window and peering through the blinds down at the street below. “Marcone’s crew. They tracked your financial clearance to the hospital’s medical trust. They think you’re Vincent’s weak spot.”
Before Emma could answer, the glass in the hospital suite’s door shattered inward.
A heavy boot kicked the frame open.
Two men in dark jackets stepped into the room, their faces half-hidden beneath baseball caps, automatic pistols raised.
“Nobody move!” the lead enforcer shouted, raising his weapon toward Emma.
Marcus didn't hesitate. He drew his pistol with blinding speed, firing two precise rounds into the doorframe just above the intruder's head, forcing them to duck behind the drywall.
“Get under the bed, Lily!” Emma screamed, shoving her daughter’s rolling table aside and pulling the little girl down to the floor.
Marcus fired again, pinning the second gunman against the hallway wall. But footsteps echoed up the stairwell—there were more coming.
Just as the situation threatened to spiral into a bloody shootout, the hallway lights flickered and died.
Heavy, synchronized combat boots echoed up the corridor.
A flash-bang grenade detonated down the hall with a deafening CRACK, followed by the sound of professional tactical gear hitting the floor.
Within thirty seconds, the entire assault squad was neutralized, disarmed, and pinned face-down against the hospital corridor carpet by six black-clad security operatives wearing the insignia of Carver Protection Group.
And walking calmly through the smoke at the center of the squad was Vincent Carver.
He wore a dark wool overcoat, his face carved from cold stone. He stepped over a dropped pistol, walked directly into Lily’s hospital room, and looked down at Emma, who was shielding her daughter on the floor.
Vincent knelt down, ignoring the dust and shattered glass.
“Are you alright?” he asked, his voice surprisingly gentle.
Emma nodded rapidly, tears in her eyes as she pulled Lily close. “Yes... yes, we’re safe.”

Vincent stood up, turning to Marcus, who was holding one of Marcone’s captured enforcers by the collar.
“Tell Marcone his message was received,” Vincent said coldly, his voice carrying the terrifying authority of a man who had finally decided to clean house permanently. “Tell him I’m coming for his docks, his warehouses, and every last brick of his operation by sunrise.”
