Chapter 3 - The New Rules of the HouseThe following Monday morning, the household staff of the Carver estate gathered in the lower-level briefing room for their usual weekly meeting.

There was an uneasy murmur among the cooks, housekeepers, and maintenance workers. Word had already spread through the grapevine about what happened on Friday night. Some whispered that Emma had been fired and thrown out into the snow; others claimed the police had hauled her away.

Danny Bell, the head chef, stood near the stainless-steel prep table, arms crossed, looking anxious.

The heavy door opened.

Vincent Carver walked in.

The room went instantly, suffocatingly quiet. Vincent didn't wear his usual suit; he wore an open-collared navy shirt and dark trousers, his hands tucked casually into his pockets.

Behind him walked Emma Reed.

She wore a clean, well-fitted manager’s blazer over a simple blouse. Her hair was neatly tied back, and though her eyes still held a trace of exhaustion, the terror was gone, replaced by stunned disbelief.

Vincent stopped at the front of the room and looked at his assembled staff.

“For the past three years,” Vincent began, his voice echoing off the tile walls, “this estate has operated under a strict philosophy. We protected ourselves with walls, cameras, and rules designed to keep the world out.”

He paused, his dark eyes scanning the room, resting for a second on Danny Bell.

“We monitored everything. We measured loyalty by how well people followed instructions. And in doing so, we failed to notice when one of our own was drowning.”

Emma lowered her gaze, her hands clasped tightly in front of her.

“Effective immediately,” Vincent continued, raising his voice slightly, “the employee handbook is being rewritten. Rule fourteen is abolished. Any employee facing medical emergencies, housing crises, or family hardships is entitled to immediate, no-interest financial assistance from company reserves.”

A collective gasp rippled through the staff.

“Furthermore,” Vincent added, turning slightly toward Emma, “effective today, Emma Reed is no longer a member of the housekeeping staff. She is the new Director of Estate Welfare and Family Outreach. Her office will be on the main floor, adjacent to the administrative wing.”

Danny Bell blinked hard, staring at Emma.

Emma looked up at Vincent, her lips parting. “Mr. Carver... I... I don't know what to say. I don't have a college degree in management—”

“You have something more valuable than a degree, Emma,” Vincent said quietly, stepping closer to her. “You know what it means to survive when the system fails you. I want you to ensure that no one working in this house ever has to smuggle food in a canvas bag again.”

Emma swallowed hard, a single tear escaping her eye and tracking down her cheek. But this time, it wasn't a tear of fear.

It was a tear of absolute, unburdened relief.
