Chapter 5 - The Poison in the Family Vault

The rain had turned into a thick, clinging mist by the time we reached St. Jude Cemetery.

The iron gates of the cemetery were unlocked, swaying slowly in the bitter night wind.

Centuries-old oak trees cast twisted shadows across rows of weathered granite headstones.

At the highest hill of the cemetery stood the Bellini family mausoleum.

It was a gothic stone cathedral in miniature, carved from dark gray marble.

Two stone gargoyles crouched above the heavy bronze double doors.

Daniel and Matteo carried heavy industrial lanterns, illuminating the carved lettering above the entrance:

BELLINI — ETERNAL REST.

Luca stood before the bronze doors.

His jaw was set in rigid lines.

He didn't look like a man visiting a grave; he looked like a general preparing to breach an enemy fortress.

“Emma,” Luca said, turning to me.

“Stay close to Daniel.”

“I’m right here, sir,” I replied.

My sneakers were soaked with muddy water, and my hands were numb from the cold, but I refused to step back.

Daniel stepped forward with a heavy iron crowbar, inserting it into the seam of the bronze doors.

With a deep grunt of effort, he wrenched the lock free.

The metal groaned in protest.

The doors creaked open, releasing a blast of stale, freezing air that smelled of dust, mold, and decaying floral wreaths.

We stepped inside.

The beam of Luca’s flashlight cut through the darkness.

Marble crypts lined the walls from floor to ceiling.

Names of deceased Bellini ancestors were etched in gold lettering across the stone slabs.

At the far end of the chamber stood an ornate marble altar dedicated to the patron saint of lost causes.

Luca walked directly to the altar.

He swept aside an antique velvet altar cloth covered in decades of dust.

Beneath the cloth lay a flat bronze plate embedded directly into the stone floor.

In the center of the plate was a keyhole no wider than a needle.

Luca reached into his pocket and pulled out the micro-key retrieved from Vanessa’s ring.

He knelt on the cold stone floor.

His hand paused for half a second.

This was the moment of truth.

The answer to why his mother had been stolen away twenty-two years ago.

He inserted the tiny key into the slot.

He turned it clockwise.

A heavy mechanical clunk reverberated through the hollow floorboards beneath our feet.

The bronze plate shifted upward by two inches.

Daniel and Matteo stepped forward, grabbing the recessed handles and lifting the heavy plate away.

A narrow stone staircase spiraled down into pitch darkness.

“Flashlights down,” Luca commanded, leading the way.

We descended eight steep steps into a subterranean chamber hidden beneath the crypt.

The room was dry, cold, and lined with reinforced steel beams.

In the center of the room sat a massive fireproof safe, bolted directly into the bedrock.

On the face of the safe was a rotary dial and a second keyhole.

Luca looked closely at the dial.

Carved into the metal casing above the dial was a date:

10 - 24 - 1994.

The exact date his mother had disappeared.

Luca turned the dial to 10, then 24, then 94.

He inserted the micro-key into the second lock.

With a heavy metallic groan, the safe door swung outward.

Inside lay three thick leather-bound ledgers, a stack of cassette tapes, and a sealed manila envelope stamped with red wax.

Luca reached in and pulled out the envelope.

He broke the wax seal with his thumb.

Inside was a single legal document and an original birth certificate printed on parchment paper.

Luca unfolded the birth certificate under the beam of the flashlight.

I watched his face.

The color vanished completely from his skin.

His lips parted in absolute horror.

His breathing turned shallow and rapid.

“Boss?” Daniel asked cautiously, taking half a step closer.

“What is it?”

Luca didn't speak.

His hands began to shake violently.

The parchment paper fluttered in his grip.

I stepped forward, looking over his broad shoulder.

My eyes scanned the faded typing on the official state document:

CHILD NAME: LUCA BELLINI.

MOTHER: LUCIA MORETTI.

FATHER: CARLO BELLINI.

My breath caught in my throat.

Luca was not a Moretti by blood.

He was the biological son of Carlo Bellini.

Luca slowly pulled out the second legal document from the envelope.

It was an agreement signed in 1994 by Carlo Bellini and Luca’s supposed father, Antonio Moretti.

The terms were laid out in cold, brutal legal language:

In exchange for ending the turf war between the two families, Antonio Moretti had agreed to raise Carlo Bellini’s illegitimate son as his own heir.

But there was a clause at the bottom of the page.

A handwritten amendment signed in dark black ink:

If Lucia Moretti ever reveals the child's true paternity, she will be committed indefinitely to St. Catherine’s, and ownership of the Moretti shipping docks will transfer entirely to Carlo Bellini upon Luca’s wedding to Carlo’s legitimate daughter, Vanessa.

Vanessa was Luca’s half-sister.

The engagement wasn't just a political union.

It was an orchestrated incestuous fraud designed to steal the entire Moretti empire from within.

Luca let out a low, guttural roar of pure agony that shook the stone walls of the mausoleum.

He crumpled the contract in his fist.

“They knew,” Luca choked out, his voice thick with tears and lethal rage.

“All of them knew.”

Suddenly, the beam of a high-powered flashlight cut through the darkness from the top of the stairs.

A slow, rhythmic clapping echoed down the stone staircase.

“Brilliant work, boy,” a deep voice sneered from above.

We snapped our heads upward.

Standing at the top of the spiral stairs was Carlo Bellini.

He was not tied up.

Behind him stood four heavily armed men dressed in private security uniforms.

And beside Carlo stood Isabella Moretti—Luca’s younger sister.

She was holding a loaded silver revolver.

And she was pointing the barrel directly at Luca’s head.
