Chapter 14 - The Verdict, the Empty Restaurant, and the Door I Chose to Open

Victor was convicted of financial crimes.

The fire case remained open pending further evidence.

I had learned not to demand neat endings.

Real justice took time.

Sometimes it arrived in pieces.

The Gilded Lily offered me my old job.

I declined.

Instead I enrolled in a hospitality program.

Mara helped me apply for a scholarship.

I worked mornings at a neighborhood cafe.

Nobody grabbed my wrist there.

Nobody called me property.

One afternoon Dante visited.

He waited until my shift ended.

He ordered coffee.

He paid the listed price.

Then he asked whether we could talk.

I sat across from him.

He told me he had stepped away from the family business.

He was cooperating with investigators.

He had started counseling.

I listened without promising anything.

“You don't owe me a second chance,” he said.

“I know.”

He smiled sadly.

I thought of the night we met.

The broken plates.

The fear.

The name he knew before I spoke.

“I might be willing to know you,” I said.

“But only as equals.”

He held out his hand.

Not to claim me.

May you like

Just to shake mine.

This time, I took it freely.
