Chapter 10 - The Witness Who Came Back From the Dead and the Deal Victor Offered

Daniel Price arrived under federal protection.
He was twenty-eight now.
He had been sixteen when he disappeared.
I recognized his eyes from a clinic photograph.
He remembered my mother.
“She gave me bus fare,” he said.
“And told me to keep going.”
He had witnessed Victor paying a corrupt inspector.
The inspector approved false fire reports.
Daniel had saved a recording.
But the original device was missing.
He believed Victor had it.
Agent Reyes arranged a meeting with Victor's lawyer.
Victor offered to return the device.
In exchange, he wanted immunity.
Reyes refused to promise anything.
I watched her keep her face still.
It reminded me of Dante.
But her power came from the law.
Not from fear.
Victor's lawyer slid a photograph across the table.
It showed my mother entering a hospital.
Two years after the supposed fire.
I stopped breathing.
The photograph had a date.
A location.
And a signature on the back.

“Evelyn survived,” the lawyer said.
“Victor knows where she went.”
