Chapter 11 - The Confession Beneath Gunpoint

With the Bellinis locked in federal custody and the syndicate council formally acknowledging Luca’s absolute leadership over the city’s operations, a deep, long-overdue peace settled over the estate.
That evening, Luca called me into the conservatory.
The glass room was warm, filled with the rich, earthy scent of blooming orchids, jasmine, and citrus trees. The scorched wood from the fire two nights ago had already been cleared away, leaving fresh, clean soil ready for planting.
Luca stood by the wide glass panes, staring out into the dusk.
“Elena left for Philadelphia an hour ago,” Luca said as I entered. “Daniel assigned two permanent details to ensure she is never bothered again. She’s going to start a foundation for underprivileged children.”
“That’s wonderful, Luca.”
He turned around. The usual guarded, impenetrable armor he wore was gone. In its place was a vulnerability that took my breath away.
“Thomas told me you gave your two weeks’ notice to the household agency this afternoon,” Luca said softly.
My heart gave a nervous flutter. “I took this job because I needed money to pay off my debts and help my sister. But... after everything that’s happened, I assumed you’d want a fresh start. A proper staff without all the trauma attached.”
Luca walked slowly toward me, stopping only inches away.
“Do you think you’re just staff to me, Lily?”
I looked up into his deep, intense eyes. “I was hired to manage your house, Mr. Moretti.”
“My name is Luca,” he whispered, his hand gently rising to brush a stray lock of hair behind my ear. His touch was warm, electric, sending a shiver through my entire body. “And in twelve days, you’ve shown more courage, more honesty, and more heart than anyone who has walked these halls in thirty years.”
“Luca...”
“When my mother died, this house became a tomb,” he continued, his voice thick with raw honesty. “I thought I had to marry Vanessa to protect the family name. I thought power was the only thing that kept you safe from the dark. But watching you protect Thomas... watching you drive into danger to save a stranger... you reminded me what my mother spent her life trying to teach me.”
“What’s that?” I whispered, my voice barely audible in the quiet room.
“That power without honor is just poison,” Luca said. “And that a home is only as good as the woman who shares it with you.”
He took both of my hands into his.
“Don’t leave, Lily. Stay here. Not as an assistant. Not as an employee. Stay with me.”
My breath hitched. The immense weight of the world he lived in was undeniable, but looking at the fierce devotion in his eyes, I knew I had never felt safer in my life.
“On one condition,” I smiled softly through the sudden tears in my eyes.
Luca smiled—a genuine, breathtaking smile that transformed his entire face. “Name it.”
“You let Thomas pick whatever roses he wants for the main terrace.”

Luca laughed, a rich, warm sound that filled the glass room.
“Deal.”
