Chapter 10 - Betrayal in Plain Sight

Two days later, the storm had completely passed.
The Moretti estate was quiet, bathed in the crisp, golden sunlight of an October afternoon.
The federal authorities had officially unsealed their thirty-four-count indictment against Salvatore and Marco Bellini, seizing every asset, bank account, and property owned by their syndicate. The decades-old murder of Vincent Morales was finally solved, and Lucia Moretti’s name had been officially cleared of all tragic ambiguity.
In the grand dining room, Elena Ramos sat with a cup of hot tea, looking over the legal documents that restored her rightful family inheritance. Luca had arranged for top-tier legal representation to ensure that Vincent Morales’s legitimate estate was transferred directly to her name.
“I don’t even know what to do with all of this,” Elena admitted to me, a faint, disbelieving smile on her lips. “I’m a nurse. I like taking care of kids.”
“Then build a clinic,” I suggested with a warm smile. “Name it after your mother and Lucia. Give children the safety you were given.”
Elena’s eyes shone with gratitude. She reached out, squeezing my hand tightly. “Luca told me what you did, Lily. How you stood up to Vanessa, how you drove through gunfire to get to me. You saved my life.”
“We saved each other,” I said.
A few moments later, the heavy front door opened.
Vanessa Bellini stood in the foyer, flanked by two federal marshals. She had been granted one hour under armed escort to collect her personal belongings before her formal arraignment on conspiracy and corporate fraud charges.
She was stripped of her expensive designer jewelry, wearing a plain gray sweater, her face pale and hollow.
When she saw me standing near the dining room archway, her steps slowed.
“You,” Vanessa hissed, her voice filled with bitter venom. “You were supposed to be an assistant. A nobody I could order around.”
“You made a mistake, Vanessa,” I said calmly, meeting her hateful stare without flinching. “You thought people were things you could buy, use, and discard when they became inconvenient. That’s why you lost.”
Vanessa scoffed, turning toward the stairs. “Luca will tire of you, just like he tired of me. Men like him don’t love. They only conquer.”
“Luca never loved you, Vanessa,” a deep voice rang out from the grand staircase.
Luca descended the steps, looking commanding and immaculate in a dark tailored suit. He stopped three paces from his former fiancée.
“You never saw this house as a home,” Luca said coldly. “You saw it as a throne. And you were willing to desecrate my mother’s memory to sit on it.”
Vanessa looked at him, her lips trembling with suppressed rage and defeat.

“Take her away,” Luca told the marshals.
Without another word, the officers escorted Vanessa Bellini out of the front doors, out of the Moretti estate, and out of Luca’s life forever.
