Chapter 7 - The Ledger Hidden Behind Laura’s Wine Cellar Connected My Old Boss to Missing Children

I returned to Laura with Detective Park.
David Kesler met us by the bar.
He smiled until he saw the warrant.
Then his hands disappeared beneath the counter.
"Keep them where I can see them," Park said.
David obeyed.
I remembered begging him for one chance.
Now he wouldn't meet my eyes.
Roman had purchased the building years earlier.
He had not purchased the restaurant itself.
That distinction mattered.
David had used the cellar for private deliveries.
The shipments arrived after midnight.
They were labeled imported wine.
The boxes held medical records.
I recognized the Bright Harbor logo.
Beside it sat a handwritten ledger.
Dates. Amounts. Patient initials.
And coded transfers to an offshore account.
"Who kept this?" Park asked.
David insisted he was only a landlord's tenant.
But the ledger contained his signature.
I pointed to the entries dated Thursdays.
Those were my busiest shifts.
David always sent the kitchen staff home early.
He had needed the loading dock empty.
My firing suddenly looked different.
"Did you know I helped Roman?"
He looked toward the ceiling camera.
"I knew you were trouble."
Park arrested him for evidence tampering.
As they led him outside, he turned to me.
"You think Roman's innocent?"
I did not answer.
I wanted the truth more than revenge.
At the station, forensic accountants found a second ledger.
It listed the same payments under another name.
ROMAN HOLDINGS.
I watched Roman read the entry.
He looked at Park.
"Someone used my company."
May you like
Park folded her arms.
"Then help us prove it."
