Chapter 10 - The Woman Waiting Beside the Railroad Tracks Knew My Mother’s Name and the Secret She Died Protecting

The woman in the cream coat surrendered quietly.
Her real name was Nora Bellamy.
She had worked beside my mother.
Not in a hospital.
At Bright Harbor's original office.
"Your mother discovered the billing fraud," Nora said.
I sat across from her behind thick glass.
Park recorded every word.
Nora claimed my mother copied the ledgers.
She planned to deliver them to investigators.
Then her car brakes failed.
I remembered the funeral.
The rain. The closed casket.
I had believed it was an accident.
Nora looked ashamed.
"I helped them find her."
My fingers curled around the table edge.
"Why?"
"They threatened my daughter."
She did not ask for forgiveness.
That was the first honest thing about her.
Nora said Leo had seen Julian arguing with Elias.
A hidden camera recorded their meeting.
Someone copied the footage into his jacket.
"Who?" I asked.
"A woman who worked at the clinic."
"Where is Leo now?"
Nora closed her eyes.
"Julian moved him yesterday."
Park showed her a map.
Nora pointed to a medical office near the lake.
It had closed three years earlier.
A security camera still watched the entrance.
On its latest recording, a child walked inside.
He wore mismatched sneakers.
One lace was bright orange.
I had tied that lace myself.
For the first time in days, I saw Leo alive.
May you like
I pressed my palm against the screen.
"I'm coming, baby."
