Chapter 10 - THE CONFRONTATION IN THE SNOW

The freezing air hit Emily like a wall of ice.
She stood at the top of the wooden porch steps, her hands trembling inside her coat pockets, looking down at the most feared man in Chicago.
Alessandro watched her descend the steps.
Each of his boots crunched slowly into the snow as he closed the distance between them. When he reached the bottom of the stairs, he stopped, looking up at her with an expression so complex—relief, fury, possessiveness—that it defied simple description.
"You're freezing," Alessandro said, his voice softening just a fraction as he unbuttoned his own cashmere overcoat and stepped forward to drape it over her shoulders.
Emily flinched away from his touch, letting the coat slide off her shoulders into the snow.
"Don't touch me," she said, her voice shaking but clear.
Alessandro’s hand hovered in the empty air. His jaw tightened, a muscle jumping in his cheek.
"You ran away from your home, from your security, from your husband, over a political arrangement you knew was necessary for the syndicate," Alessandro said, his tone turning cold again.
"An arrangement?" Emily laughed—a bitter, hollow sound that echoed off the trees. "You stood in front of sixty people and declared your mistress the lady of my house! You didn't just replace me, Alessandro—you publicly executed my dignity!"
"Valentina is a tool!" Alessandro shouted, finally losing his iron composure, taking two rapid steps up the stairs until he was standing inches from her face. "She means nothing to me! The New York board demanded a public face for the merger! You were supposed to stay upstairs, play the grieving wife for six months, and let me handle the politics!"
"And what about the baby?" Emily whispered, her voice cracking as she pressed her hand protectively over her stomach. "Were we supposed to stay upstairs while you paraded your whore around my dining room?"
Alessandro froze.
His eyes dropped instantly from her face down to her hand resting against her coat.
The color drained from his face.
"What... what did you say?" he whispered.
Emily looked straight into his eyes.
"Eight weeks, Alessandro," she said, her voice steady now, filled with a quiet, devastating finality. "I had the appointment confirmation in my handbag the night you made your announcement. I was going to tell you over dinner. But you were too busy signing away our marriage to notice."
Alessandro staggered backward a half-step, as if he had been physically struck in the chest.
"You're... you're pregnant?" he breathed, his hand coming up instinctively toward her, then dropping back to his side as he realized she wouldn't let him touch her.
"I was," Emily corrected bitterly. "Before your security guards chased me through a freezing motel parking lot and forced me to leap out a second-story window into the sleet. The doctor in the cabin says the baby might not survive your hospitality."
Alessandro turned around slowly.
He looked at Thomas Vance standing by the SUV.
The enforcer took two steps back, his face turning the color of chalk. "Boss, I didn't know—she never said—"
Alessandro drew his pistol from his shoulder holster with blinding speed.
Before anyone could blink, he fired two shots into the snow directly between Thomas’s boots, making the enforcer jump.
"Get in the car," Alessandro snarled, his voice vibrating with homicidal rage. "If she loses this child, I will skin you alive and salt the wounds before I put a bullet in your skull."
Thomas scrambled into the passenger seat of the SUV without uttering a single word.
Alessandro turned back to Emily.
His face was pale, his dark eyes shimmering with a raw, terrifying desperation that Emily had never seen in all the seven years of their marriage.
May you like
"Emily," he said, dropping slowly to one knee in the snow right in front of her, ignoring the freezing slush soaking through his trousers. "Please."
