Chapter 9 - THE CABIN SURROUNDED

The wind howling through the pine trees sounded like a pack of wolves closing in for the kill.
Inside the cabin, Emily sat upright in the wooden rocking chair, a steaming mug of herbal tea between her hands.
Sara stood by the window, peering through a small pair of military-grade binoculars down the snowy logging road.
"They're coming," Sara said quietly.
Emily’s heart skipped a beat. "How many?"
"One black SUV. Standard syndicate plating. And..." Sara lowered the binoculars, her face tightening into a grim line. "Alessandro’s private Mercedes G-Wagon right behind it."
Emily stood up, the mug slipping from her fingers and shattering against the hardwood floor. "How did they find us so fast?"
"My old homestead registry," Sara cursed under her breath, grabbing a Remington shotgun from the rack above the fireplace and slamming two heavy shells into the chambers. "I forgot the deed was still filed under an old family trust in Marquette County."
"Sara, we can't fight them," Emily said, panic rising in her voice. "There are dozens of them. They'll kill you."
"They won't kill either of us until Alessandro gets what he wants," Sara replied, checking the safety catch. "And what he wants is you walking out that front door on your own two feet so he can put a diamond collar back around your neck."
Outside, the crunch of heavy tires stopping in the snow echoed through the clearing.
Then silence.
A heavy, suffocating silence that felt like the eye of a hurricane.
"Emily," a voice boomed from outside, amplified by a megaphone.
Alessandro.
His voice resonated off the frozen timber walls, calm, controlled, and utterly inescapable.
"I know you're inside. I know Sara is with you. Nobody needs to die today. Open the door, come outside, and let's go home."
Emily walked slowly toward the front window, peering through a crack in the frost-covered glass.
Alessandro stood in the center of the snowy clearing, coat unbuttoned, his breath pluming in the freezing air. He wasn't holding a weapon. He didn't need one. Four armed enforcers stood behind him with assault rifles raised, waiting for a single word.
"Go to hell, Alessandro!" Sara yelled out the cracked second-story window, leveling her shotgun over the porch railing. "You left her for dead at your own anniversary! She's not your prisoner anymore!"
Alessandro didn't look up at Sara. His eyes remained fixed entirely on the front door of the cabin.
"Emily," he said again, his voice dropping an octave, carrying straight through the wood. "If you make me break that door down, the people who helped you leave this state will not survive the hour. You know me. You know I mean it."
Emily closed her eyes.
The blackmail was effortless. He didn't have to threaten her; he threatened the only person who had risked her life to save her.
She reached for the iron latch of the front door.
"Don't you dare," Sara hissed, grabbing Emily’s arm. "If you walk out there, you're signing your own death warrant."
"If I don't walk out there, he kills you," Emily whispered, tears streaming down her face. "And my baby needs me alive, Sara. Even if it's inside a golden cage."
May you like
Emily pulled her arm free, pushed the heavy oak door open, and stepped out onto the snowy porch.
