Chapter 7 - Whispers in the Executive Boardroom

The 44th floor of the Moretti Global corporate tower was a palace of brushed titanium, floor-to-ceiling glass, and minimalist Italian marble overlooking the glittering expanse of Central Park.
Inside the executive boardroom, twelve senior vice presidents and logistics directors sat around a thirty-foot conference table made of smoked glass.
At the head of the table sat Vincent Moreau.
Vincent was forty-one, immaculate in a custom three-piece navy pinstripe suit, his silver-flecked dark hair styled with precision. He leaned back in his leather executive chair, twirling an antique Montblanc fountain pen between his fingers, listening with an air of relaxed authority as the Director of Maritime Operations presented the quarterly earnings slide.
"...as you can see from the revised third-quarter projections," the director explained, clicking a remote, "the restructuring of our North Pier vendor contracts has yielded an eleven percent reduction in operational overhead, primarily through our new logistics partnership with Apex Maritime—"
The heavy mahogany double doors of the boardroom swung open with explosive force, slamming against the drywall with the sound of a thunderclap.
Every executive at the table gasped, several leaping out of their chairs in terror.
Lorenzo DeLuca stepped into the room.
He did not look like the grief-stricken, isolated widower who had spent the last two months hiding behind the walls of his upstate mansion. He wore a long, midnight-black overcoat over tactical apparel, his eyes blazing with a predatory, lethal coldness that sucked the oxygen out of the room.
Behind him marched Mason Reed and four armed private security operatives, their hands resting openly on holstered sidearms. Flanking them was Detective Rachel Ortiz, her gold NYPD shield displayed prominently on her leather belt.
"Meeting adjourned," Lorenzo said. His voice was not loud, but it carried an authority so absolute that the entire room instantly fell into dead silence.
The vice presidents looked frantically between Vincent and Lorenzo.
"Gentlemen... leave us," Vincent said smoothly, though his knuckles tightened almost imperceptibly around his Montblanc pen. He maintained an easy, reassuring smile. "It appears Mr. DeLuca has decided to rejoin us ahead of schedule."
The executives gathered their laptops and files in panicked haste, scrambling past Mason’s security team like frightened mice, the heavy doors clicking shut behind them.
Only Vincent, Lorenzo, Mason, and Detective Ortiz remained.
Vincent rose slowly to his feet, buttoning his jacket with practiced elegance. He walked around the smoked-glass table with an outstretched hand, his face radiating warm, fraternal concern.
"Lorenzo," Vincent said, his voice rich and soothing. "You should have called ahead. If I had known you were feeling strong enough to return to the office, I would have had the executive dining room prepared—"
Lorenzo didn't speak. He didn't take the outstretched hand.
With lightning speed, Lorenzo’s left hand shot out, locking around Vincent’s throat like a steel vise.
In a single, violent motion, Lorenzo slammed Vincent backward against the glass conference table. The heavy smoked glass groaned under the impact as Lorenzo leaned down, his face inches from Vincent’s widening eyes, his fingers compressing the COO’s windpipe until Vincent’s breath became a desperate, raspy wheeze.
"Lorenzo! Stand down!" Ortiz shouted, stepping forward with her hand on her holster, though Mason subtly stepped into her path, shaking his head.
"Give him thirty seconds, Detective," Mason whispered calmly. "He earned it."
Lorenzo stared down into the face of his lifelong friend, watching the smug, polished facade peel away to reveal the raw, naked terror underneath.
"Where is she, Vincent?" Lorenzo asked, his voice a low, terrifying whisper.
"L-Lorenzo... what... what are you talking about?" Vincent gasped, his hands clawing uselessly at Lorenzo’s iron grip. "You're... you're insane... Isabella is dead..."
Lorenzo reached into his coat with his free hand, pulled out the gold travel band, and pressed the cold metal directly against Vincent’s eyeball.
"I found her ring in the rail yard two hours ago," Lorenzo whispered. "I found Bruno’s tracks. I found the blood on the brickwork. And I have the financial wire logs from Mariner Holdings showing the hundred and eighty thousand dollars you paid Dr. Rusk to forge her dental records."
Vincent’s face completely drained of color. The lie died in his throat.
"You took Claire Donnelly," Lorenzo continued, his voice shaking with a fury so deep it sounded demonic. "You put her in my wife’s car, you burned her alive in a ravine, and you made me bury her under my family's name while you stole ten million dollars from my ports."
"Lorenzo... please..." Vincent choked out, tears of asphyxiation streaming down his cheeks. "They... they were going to expose... everything... I built this company with you... I deserved half..."
"Where is my wife?" Lorenzo tightened his grip until Vincent’s lips began to turn blue. "Give me a location, or I throw you out of that window onto Madison Avenue right now."
"I don't know!" Vincent screamed through his constricted throat. "I swear to God, Lorenzo! She escaped! Three weeks ago... from the farmhouse in Kingston! Anthony was guarding her... she broke the bathroom window and vanished into the woods with the dog!"
Lorenzo held him for three more seconds, the temptation to crush Vincent’s larynx vibrating through every muscle in his arm.
Then, remembering Detective Ortiz and the promise he had made to Isabella to do this through the light of truth, Lorenzo released his grip.
Vincent collapsed onto the carpet, coughing violently, gasping for air as he clutched his bruised neck.
Ortiz stepped around the table, pulled a pair of steel handcuffs from her belt, and shoved Vincent facedown into the marble floor with professional brutality.
"Vincent Moreau," Ortiz announced, clicking the ratchets tightly around his wrists. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, kidnapping, forensic fraud, and corporate grand larceny. You have the right to remain silent."
Lorenzo turned away, looking out the panoramic glass window at the sprawling city below.
"Mason," Lorenzo said, his voice steady once more.
May you like
"Yes, Lorenzo?"
"Contact our aerial tactical units. We are heading north to Kingston."
