Chapter 14 - The Long Road Back from the Other Side of Life

The recovery was not a cinematic miracle; it was a slow, painful, day-by-day reconstruction of two shattered lives.
Isabella spent two weeks at New York-Presbyterian Hospital under round-the-clock protection from a joint detail of federal marshals and Lorenzo’s most trusted personal guards. Her fractured ribs healed slowly; she regained twelve of the twenty pounds she had lost during her captivity; and the jagged laceration along her temple was repaired by the city’s finest plastic surgeons, leaving only a thin, silver scar that she refused to conceal.
'It’s a reminder that I survived,' she told Lorenzo when he offered to hire a specialist from Switzerland to erase the mark. 'Leave it.'
When she finally returned home to the upstate estate in mid-November, the seventy-room mansion felt entirely different.
The velvet shroud was removed from the grand piano in the west parlor. Isabella’s favorite bone-china tea mug was brought down from the top pantry shelf. Her perfumes once again scented the morning air in the master bedroom.
Yet, trauma left its deep, invisible scars.
For the first two months, Isabella could not sleep in total darkness. She experienced violent panic attacks whenever a heavy door latched shut unexpectedly, and she refused to enter any vehicle that had tinted windows.
Every night, Bruno slept directly beside her side of the king-sized bed, his massive black head resting over her ankles, his presence the only anchor that kept the nightmares of the Kingston basement at bay.
And Lorenzo changed too.
The man who had once believed that total control and ruthless fear were the only tools capable of protecting his family began attending weekly trauma counseling sessions with Isabella in the city. Sitting in a therapist’s office, discussing vulnerability, grief, and the limits of power, sounded like madness to the underworld figures who had feared his name for twenty years.
Lorenzo didn't care.
"I spent my entire life thinking power kept people safe," Lorenzo told Isabella one quiet evening by the hearth in his study, holding her hand as the firelight danced across their wedding bands. "I had billions of dollars, an army of soldiers, and half the politicians in the state in my pocket... and none of it stopped Vincent from taking you. The only thing that brought you back was a three-year-old child who noticed a broken brass ring on a dog collar."

Isabella smiled softly, resting her head against his shoulder. "Then maybe it’s time you stop being the boss of an empire, Lorenzo... and just be my husband."
"I can do that," Lorenzo whispered, kissing the top of her head. "I can definitely do that."
