Chapter 5 - THE CROSS AND THE CRASH

The impact sounded like a bomb detonating.
Glass shattered, showering the interior of the SUV like deadly hail. The heavy vehicle spun wildly across the wet asphalt, the tires screeching before slamming hard into a concrete divider.
My head cracked against the window frame. For a few seconds, the world was nothing but a high-pitched ringing and the smell of deployed airbags and burning rubber.
“Lily!” Grace screamed from beneath me, ignoring her bleeding side. “Lily, are you hurt?”
“I’m okay!” Lily sobbed from the floorboards, her white wedding dress covered in dust and shattered safety glass.
I blinked the dizziness away. The front of the SUV was crushed, steam hissing from the radiator.
In the driver’s seat, Luca punched the deflated airbag out of his way. A cut on his forehead was bleeding into his eye, but he was already unholstering his weapon.
“Everyone stay down,” Luca ordered, his voice terrifyingly calm.
In the passenger seat, Selena was hyperventilating, pressing her hands against her face. She was bruised, but alive.
Through the cracked windshield, I saw the black truck that had rammed us. It was blocking the intersection. Four men in dark raincoats stepped out, their weapons drawn. We were trapped in an industrial district, surrounded by abandoned warehouses and flickering streetlights.
“They tracked us,” Selena cried, panicking. “How did they track us?”
Luca turned slowly, staring at his mistress. “Did Daniel give you a phone?”
Selena froze. She slowly reached into the pocket of her ruined silk dress and pulled out a sleek, unfamiliar black cellphone.
Luca didn’t yell. He just reached over, snatched the phone from her hand, and crushed it under his heavy boot.
“They tracked the GPS,” Luca said grimly. “Emily, can you walk?”
“Yes,” I said, my voice shaking as I helped Grace sit up.
“There’s an old meatpacking plant fifty yards to our left. The door is chained, but I can shoot the lock. When I start firing, you get Grace and Lily inside.”
“What about me?” Selena sobbed.
Luca looked at her with utter disgust. “You can pray your boyfriend’s men are merciful.”
He didn’t wait for her to argue. Luca kicked his jammed door open, rolled onto the wet pavement, and immediately opened fire.
The street erupted into chaos. Gunfire echoed off the brick buildings. I grabbed Grace by the waist, bearing her weight as Lily pushed from the other side.
“Go! Go!” I screamed.
We spilled out of the back seat into the freezing rain. Selena scrambled out behind us, terrified to be left alone in the vehicle.
Luca was providing covering fire, moving methodically backward. He shot the heavy padlock off the rusted metal doors of the meatpacking plant.
We shoved our way inside. The air was freezing and smelled of old iron and dust. Luca backed in last, slamming the heavy iron doors shut and throwing the rusted deadbolt across them.
The heavy thud of bullets hitting the outside of the door made us all flinch.
“It won’t hold them long,” Luca panted, wiping blood from his eye. He looked around the cavernous, dark warehouse. “Move to the back. Find cover.”
I helped Grace lower herself behind a massive rusted conveyor belt. Lily knelt beside her, tearing a long strip of fabric from her ruined wedding dress to tie tightly over her mother’s bleeding side.
Selena huddled in the corner, sobbing into her hands.
I looked down at Grace. Despite the pain, her eyes were sharp. She opened her hand again. The silver rosary was still there.
“Emily,” Grace whispered. “Take it.”
I hesitated, then gently took the cold metal beads from her hand.
“Twist the bottom of the crucifix,” she instructed.
My fingers were trembling, but I gripped the small silver cross and twisted. With a tiny click, the bottom half of the cross pulled away. Hidden inside the hollow stem was a tiny, tightly rolled piece of microfilm.
“What is that?” Lily asked, her eyes wide.
“It’s the master password to the offshore accounts,” Grace breathed. “The ledger tells you where the money went. But this… this is the key to taking it all back.”
Luca knelt beside his wife, looking at the tiny piece of film. The anger in his eyes was replaced by profound sorrow.
“You kept this hidden for three years,” Luca said softly. “You let me believe you hated me. You let me believe you walked away because you were tired of our life.”
Grace reached up, her bloodstained hand touching his cheek. “I thought you were the traitor, Luca. But when Daniel’s men started following me… when they forced Lily into this marriage to get me to hand over the ledger… I realized the truth.”
“What truth?” I asked, leaning in.
Grace looked at her husband. “The person who sold out the Moretti family to the Rossettis wasn’t you, Luca. It was someone who had access to your safe. Someone who knew the combination.”
Luca’s expression hardened. “Only three people knew that combination. Me. You. And…”
He stopped. The realization hit him like a physical blow.
“No,” Luca whispered. “He wouldn’t.”
“He did,” Grace said, a tear slipping down her cheek. “Your older brother, Vincenzo. He’s the one who sold us out.”
A heavy silence fell over the dark warehouse, broken only by the distant sound of sirens and the men pounding on the iron doors outside.
Suddenly, a cold voice echoed from the metal catwalk high above us.
“She’s a smart woman, little brother. She always was.”
We all snapped our heads up.
Standing on the catwalk, silhouetted by the moonlight pouring through a broken skylight, was Vincenzo Moretti.

He was holding a sniper rifle. And the laser sight was pointed directly at Grace’s chest.
