Chapter 2 - THE GROOM WAS NEVER THE REAL DANGER

Lily’s finger was trembling, but her gaze was deadlocked on the woman clinging to her father’s arm.

Selena.

The silence in the ceremony room was so absolute I could hear the rustle of the silk bridesmaids’ dresses as the girls shifted uncomfortably behind us.

Luca didn’t yell. He didn’t raise his hands.

He just slowly turned his head, his dark eyes locking onto his mistress.

“What did she just say?” Luca’s voice was a gravelly whisper, the kind of quiet that made grown men in Chicago sweat.

Selena dropped her hand from his tuxedo sleeve as if the fabric had caught fire. She took a half-step backward, her perfect posture crumbling.

“Luca, she’s hysterical,” Selena stammered, her voice pitching an octave higher than usual. “It’s cold feet. Brides get nervous and say crazy things—”

“I’m not nervous,” Lily said. Her voice broke, but she stood taller, her hands gripping the folds of her ivory gown. “Daniel told me if I didn’t walk down this aisle today and sign those papers, Mom would be arrested for a crime she didn’t commit. And he told me Selena was the one holding the evidence.”

Grace gasped, her hand flying to her chest. She looked at Luca, her eyes wide with shock.

I stood paralyzed holding the back of the white wooden chair. My heart hammered against my ribs. I was just a maid. I shouldn’t be hearing this. But I couldn’t leave Grace’s side.

“Evidence?” Luca asked, taking a slow step toward Selena. “What evidence?”

Selena’s eyes darted toward the heavy mahogany doors at the back of the room. She was looking for an exit. But Luca’s bodyguards, two massive men in dark suits, were already blocking the archway.

“Luca, please,” Selena whispered, tears welling in her eyes—real tears this time, not the manipulative ones I’d seen her use when a jewelry delivery was late. “You don’t understand what they made me do.”

“They?” Luca repeated.

The heavy mahogany doors suddenly swung open.

Standing in the threshold was Daniel.

He wore a custom white tuxedo, his blonde hair perfectly styled. He looked like the picture-perfect groom. But there was a smug, hard set to his jaw that I hadn’t noticed during the rehearsal dinner.

“Is there a problem out here?” Daniel asked smoothly, stepping into the room.

He didn’t look at Lily. He didn’t look at Luca.

He looked directly at Selena.

And I saw the older woman flinch. Selena Russo, the woman who ordered staff around like a tyrant, actually recoiled.

“We’re just having a family conversation,” Luca said, not taking his eyes off his mistress. “Daniel. Why don’t you wait in the groom’s suite?”

“I don’t think I will, Mr. Moretti,” Daniel said. He casually adjusted his cuffs. That’s when I noticed it.

Gleaming on Daniel’s wrist wasn’t the expensive Rolex Lily had bought him as a wedding gift. It was an old, tarnished silver watch with a cracked leather strap.

Grace saw it at the exact same moment I did.

She let out a choked sob, stepping forward. “Where did you get that?”

Luca frowned, looking at the watch. “Grace, what is it?”

“That’s my father’s watch,” Grace whispered, her voice trembling with absolute terror. “I kept it in a lockbox under my bed. I haven’t seen it in months.”

Daniel offered a chilling, empty smile. “A lovely antique, Mrs. Moretti. Selena was kind enough to fetch it for me when she moved into your old bedroom.”

A wave of nausea hit me. Selena hadn’t just replaced Grace in Luca’s bed. She had been digging through her personal belongings, hunting for leverage.

“You stole from my wife?” Luca asked. The word wife hung in the air. He hadn’t called Grace his wife in a year.

Selena broke down sobbing. “I had no choice! Daniel’s family… they hold the marker on my brother’s gambling debt! They said if I didn’t find something to frame Grace with, they would kill my brother! And if Lily didn’t marry Daniel, they’d hand the evidence to the Feds!”

I stared at Daniel. I had thought he was just a wealthy, arrogant kid from a tech family. But the way he stood there, completely unbothered by a mafia boss’s wrath, changed everything.

Daniel wasn’t the mastermind. He was a collector for someone much worse.

“You set my daughter up to marry a blackmailer,” Luca said, pulling his jacket back to rest his hand on his hip. A very deliberate movement.

“I did what I had to do to survive!” Selena screamed.

Lily lunged toward Daniel, her face twisted in fury. “You sick coward! You used my mother to trap me!”

Daniel laughed, a cold, sharp sound. “It’s too late to back out now, Lily.”

“The wedding is off,” Luca said, his voice dropping to a lethal octave. “Take off the watch, Daniel. Then walk out that door before I forget we’re in a church.”

Daniel didn’t move. He just smiled, slowly reaching into his tuxedo pocket.

“I’m afraid I can’t do that, Luca,” Daniel said. “Because if this wedding doesn’t happen, the precinct captain is waiting outside with a warrant for Grace’s arrest. And the men guarding your perimeter? They don’t work for you anymore.”

Daniel snapped his fingers.

The two massive bodyguards standing by the doors—men Luca had trusted for a decade—drew their weapons.

But they didn’t aim at Daniel.

They aimed them directly at Luca and Grace.
