Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

The flashing red and blue lights of the ambulances painted the walls of the mansion’s grand foyer in a chaotic, terrifying strobe.

Paramedics rushed through the front doors, carrying stretchers toward the drawing room where the mayor’s wife and two other guests had violently collapsed. The remaining high-society guests huddled together near the grand staircase, whispering in horrified, panicked tones.

Standing in the center of the chaos, playing the perfect, distressed hostess, was Vanessa.

She was speaking to two uniformed police officers, dabbing her dry eyes with a tissue.

“I just don't understand,” Vanessa said, her voice trembling perfectly for the audience. “Everything was fine until the wine was served. I specifically saw our maid, Julia, hovering over the decanters for an unusually long time in the kitchen.”

The older police officer pulled out his notepad. “And you believe this maid had a motive, Miss Bellini?”

“She was reprimanded earlier today for stealing,” Vanessa lied smoothly, loud enough for the wealthy guests to hear. “She became very hostile. I warned Luca she was unstable.”

“Officer.”

Luca’s voice cut through the foyer like a crack of thunder.

The entire room went completely silent. The guests turned. Vanessa froze.

Luca walked slowly down the sweeping marble staircase. He looked completely composed, a stark contrast to the panic filling the room.

And walking two steps behind him, holding her head high despite her bruised and swollen face, was Julia.

Vanessa’s eyes locked onto Julia, a flash of pure venom crossing her features before she smoothed it away.

“Luca, darling,” Vanessa rushed forward, reaching for his arm. “Thank god you’re here. The police need to speak with Julia. We think she—”

“Don't touch me,” Luca said quietly.

The command was so absolute, so laced with cold authority, that Vanessa physically recoiled.

The older police officer stepped forward. “Mr. Moretti, your fiancée was just explaining that she witnessed this young woman tampering with the wine.”

“My fiancée is a liar,” Luca said.

A collective gasp echoed from the guests gathered by the stairs.

Vanessa let out a sharp, forced laugh. “Luca, please. The stress is getting to you. You’re confused.”

“I have never been thinking more clearly in my entire life,” Luca said. He turned to the police officer and handed him the clear plastic bag containing the wine-soaked napkin. “Officer, I want you to have this tested immediately for traces of aconite or any other neurotoxin.”

The officer took the bag, frowning. “Where did this come from?”

“It came from my personal wine glass,” Luca said, his voice carrying across the silent foyer. “My maid, Julia, witnessed Vanessa Bellini empty a vial of poison into my drink during dessert. Julia purposely spilled the glass to save my life, and preserved the napkin as evidence.”

Vanessa’s face went chalk white. “That is absurd! She is a lying, vindictive little—”

“I also want you to search Miss Bellini’s evening bag,” Luca interrupted smoothly. “If I am not mistaken, you will find the empty glass vial still inside it.”

Vanessa instinctively clutched her small, silver clutch purse tighter against her side. It was a micro-expression, but every single person in the room saw it.

“You have no right to search me!” Vanessa shrieked, her composed facade violently shattering. She looked at the guests. “He’s insane! He’s trying to frame me because he found out I was leaving him!”

“Actually,” Luca said, reaching into his jacket and pulling out the heavy, leather-bound ledger. “I’m doing this because you tried to blackmail me into signing over half of my estate to cover up this book.”

He tossed the ledger onto the marble floor. It landed with a heavy, dusty thud at Vanessa’s feet.

“That is my father’s ledger,” Luca announced to the room. “It proves that the Moretti fortune was built on extortion and theft. It proves he destroyed the Bellini family twenty-five years ago. Vanessa came here tonight not for love, but to reclaim her stolen money by forcing me into a marriage under threat of framing an innocent woman for murder.”

The silence in the room was absolute.

Vanessa stared at the ledger, her breathing heavy, realizing her entire twenty-five-year plan was burning to ash in front of her eyes.

She looked up at Luca, her eyes blazing with pure, unadulterated hatred.

“You think you’ve won?” Vanessa hissed, dropping all pretense. “You just admitted your money is dirty. You just destroyed your own name in front of the entire city. You have nothing left, Luca!”

Luca looked at her, then turned his head slightly to look at Julia.

A small, genuine smile touched his lips.

“I have my conscience, Vanessa,” Luca said softly. “And for the first time in my life, I am completely free.”
