Chapter 12 - The Vows

The wedding was small.

There were no politicians. There were no billionaires, no press photographers, and no security details.

They were married in the small, sunlit courtyard behind Julia’s flower shop.

Strings of warm fairy lights hung between the brick walls. The air was thick with the scent of jasmine and fresh roses.

Rosa Alvarez sat in the front row, wearing a bright floral dress, dabbing her eyes with a lace handkerchief. Beside her sat Mrs. Carter, who had finally retired and looked ten years younger without the stress of managing a hostile estate.

Julia stood at the end of the short aisle, holding her father’s arm.

She wore a simple, flowing white gown, her hair pinned loosely with fresh baby’s breath. She didn't wear any heavy makeup. She didn't need to hide anything anymore.

When she looked down the aisle, her breath caught.

Luca was waiting for her. He wore a sharp, navy suit, but his posture was completely relaxed. He was smiling so hard his eyes crinkled at the corners. He looked like a man who had finally found his home.

The music played softly as Thomas walked his daughter down the aisle. When they reached the altar, Thomas kissed Julia’s cheek and placed her hand firmly into Luca’s.

“Take care of her, son,” Thomas whispered.

“With my life,” Luca promised.

The officiant, a close friend of Thomas’s, began the ceremony. But when it came time for the vows, Luca and Julia turned to face each other, ignoring everyone else in the courtyard.

“A year ago,” Luca began, his voice carrying clearly in the quiet space, “I asked you to look at me. I asked you to move your hair, and I forced you to let me see your pain. I thought I was protecting you. But I was wrong. You were the one protecting me.”

He gently took both of her hands, his thumbs tracing her knuckles.

“You saw the truth of my life when I refused to look at it,” Luca continued, his voice thick with emotion. “You showed me that a legacy built on fear is worthless. You gave me the courage to burn it down. I promise to spend every day of my life building something new with you. Something true. Something that belongs only to us.”

Julia took a trembling breath, looking into the eyes of the man who had given up an empire for her.

“When I walked into your house, I was invisible,” Julia said softly, tears shining in her eyes. “I was terrified, and I was silent. But you heard me anyway. You didn't just see the bruise on my face, Luca. You saw me. You stood between me and the darkness, and you told me I didn't have to be afraid anymore.”

She squeezed his hands tightly.

“You gave me back my father’s life. You gave me back my voice. I will stand by your side, in the light and in the dark, for the rest of our days. I am yours, completely.”

The officiant smiled, wiping a stray tear from his own eye.

“By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.”

Luca didn't hesitate. He pulled Julia into his arms, dipping her slightly, and kissed her with a passion that made the small crowd erupt into cheers.

When they finally broke apart, both of them were laughing.

They walked back down the aisle together, hand in hand, stepping out of the courtyard and onto the sunlit sidewalk of the city.

The past was gone. The shadows had vanished.

They were free.
