Chapter 8 - The Luxury Manor in Whispering Oaks

The storm over northern Illinois broke into torrential rain as a convoy of four black armored tactical vehicles sped down the winding, forested roads of Lake Forest.

I sat in the passenger seat of Detective Miller’s command vehicle, wearing a Kevlar tactical vest over my scrubs. I had refused to stay behind at the hospital; if little Chloe was trapped in an underground bunker with compromised air supply, she would need immediate emergency pediatric resuscitation.

At 1:15 AM, the convoy smashed through the wrought-iron security gates of the Whispering Oaks estate.

The manor was massive—a twenty-room stone mansion surrounded by dense, dark woods, completely isolated from neighboring properties. The windows were pitch-black.

“Breach teams, move in!” Miller commanded through the tactical net.

Twelve heavily armed SWAT officers in full tactical gear stacked against the front double doors.

BOOM!

The hydraulic ram obliterated the heavy oak doors, and the team flooded the grand foyer with weapon-mounted flashlights cutting through the darkness.

“Clear right! Clear left! Moving to the basement!”

I followed close behind Miller and the lead breacher, my medical jump-bag strapped tightly across my back.

We descended the wide stone stairs into the massive wine cellar. Rows of vintage wine racks lined the exposed brick walls.

“Where’s the entrance?” the SWAT commander asked, scanning the walls with a thermal imaging camera.

I pulled up the blueprint from Hannah’s micro-drive on my tablet. “Third pillar on the left. The vintage 1982 Bordeaux rack is a biometric counterweight latch.”

Miller stepped forward, grabbing the heavy wooden rack and pulling it forward with all his strength.

With a deep, mechanical groan, a four-ton section of the brick wall swung inward, revealing a reinforced steel blast door with a digital keypad and an electronic emergency lockout timer.

The digital timer on the keypad was glowing bright red:
