Chapter 13 - The DNA That Shattered His Fortune

Forty-eight hours later, the grand auditorium of the Chicago Federal Courthouse was packed with over two hundred journalists, attorneys, and law enforcement officials.
The United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois stood at the podium beside Detective James Miller and me.
On the large projection screens behind the podium were the official forensic DNA reports released by the state crime lab.
“This morning,” the U.S. Attorney announced, “forensic genetic testing confirmed beyond all doubt that the woman previously identified as Emily Harris is, in fact, Hannah Austin—the rightful sole surviving heir to the $35 million Austin Pharmaceutical estate.”
The room erupted into a flurry of camera flashes and rapid typing.
“Furthermore,” the prosecutor continued, “DNA recovered from the Lake Michigan vehicle wreckage has been conclusively matched to the late Emily Austin, confirming that Daniel Harris orchestrated a five-year conspiracy of homicide, physical mutilation, and systemic fraud to unlawfully seize control of the Austin family legacy.”
The prosecutor turned, nodding to me.
I stepped up to the microphone, dressed in my clean physician’s coat.
“As the treating physician who admitted Hannah Austin to Trauma Room 2,” I spoke clearly into the bank of microphones, “I can confirm that Hannah survived five years of unimaginable captivity, physical torture, and intentional medical neglect. The industrial cast placed on her arm was engineered not to heal her, but to conceal the evidence of her sister’s murder and the key to Daniel Harris’s financial crimes.”
I looked out at the sea of reporters.
“Hannah Austin is currently recovering in stable condition at Chicago Memorial Hospital, reunited with her six-year-old niece, Chloe. Her courage, resilience, and unyielding will to survive have brought down one of the most ruthless criminal conspiracies in modern Illinois history.”
The auditorium broke into a spontaneous wave of applause.

Across town, inside the administrative offices of Chicago Memorial Hospital, Dr. Kenneth Hayes was escorted from the building in handcuffs by federal agents, charged with felony obstruction of justice and accepting illegal corporate kickbacks to purge hospital medical records.
The hospital board immediately appointed a new, independent oversight committee, with full restoration of all clinical authority to our emergency department team.
