Chapter 6 - Shadows from the Past and the Secret Rival Seeking Ethan's Downfall

Night fell over Richmond, but the lights inside the Caldwell conservatory burned until midnight.
Hour after hour, Clare drilled both men with relentless precision. Henry mastered the opening steps—a slow, dignified box turn that required minimal cardiovascular strain but radiated timeless elegance. When the transition cue arrived, Henry would step aside, bow to his son, and Ethan would take Clare’s hand for the sweeping, high-energy finale.
When Henry finally retired to bed at eleven, exhausted but triumphant, Clare and Ethan remained on the floor.
The rain had returned, tapping a frantic rhythm against the glass dome above them. The room was illuminated only by the warm glow of the fireplace and the ambient lights of the garden.
“Again,” Ethan murmured, pulling Clare back into his arms.
“Ethan, we’ve run the transition twelve times,” Clare breathed, her hands resting against his broad chest. “You haven’t missed a single step.”
“It needs to be flawless, Clare. There is zero margin for error.”
“You’re not dancing for the board right now, Ethan. You’re dancing with me.”
Ethan stopped moving.
They were standing near the crackling fire, their shadows stretching long across the polished wood. Ethan looked down at her, his eyes reflecting the amber flames. His hand on her waist tightened, drawing her so close that she could feel the heat radiating from his skin.
“Why are you doing this?” Ethan asked, his voice low and raspy with emotion. “Any other instructor would have taken the money and run the moment the press started circling.”
“Because your father reminds me of my mother,” Clare admitted softly, looking down at his crisp collar. “Before she passed, she wanted to visit the coast one last time. I was so busy managing the studio’s finances, so obsessed with being responsible, that I told her we’d go next month. Next month never came.”
A tear escaped Clare’s eye, trailing down her cheek.
Before she could wipe it away, Ethan reached up. His thumb, warm and calloused, gently caught the teardrop, brushing across her cheekbone with unbelievable tenderness.
“You’re carrying your own ghost,” Ethan whispered, his face inches from hers.
“We both are,” Clare replied, leaning into the warmth of his palm.
Ethan’s gaze dropped to her lips. The air between them grew thick, charged with days of unspoken attraction, mutual respect, and shared grief. Clare saw the raw hunger in his eyes—the desire to shed the armor he had worn for years and simply be a man who wanted a woman.
“Clare...” Ethan breathed her name like a prayer.
He leaned down, his lips brushing against hers in a hesitant, feather-light caress that sent shivers racing down her spine. When she parted her lips with a soft sigh, Ethan groaned, wrapping his other arm around her back and pulling her flush against his chest. The kiss deepened into a desperate, passionate embrace. It was fierce, hungry, yet filled with a profound gentleness that made Clare’s soul ache with longing.
For several minutes, the world outside ceased to exist. There were no corporate takeovers, no board meetings, no past tragedies. There was only the heat of the fire, the taste of rain and espresso on his lips, and the rhythmic beating of two hearts finding solace in the dark.
When Ethan finally broke the kiss, he rested his forehead against hers, his breath ragged.
“I haven't felt alive like this since she died,” Ethan murmured against her skin. “You’ve turned my entire life upside down, Clare Morgan.”
“Is that a bad thing?”
“It’s the most terrifying thing that has ever happened to me.”
Suddenly, the harsh ringing of Ethan’s phone shattered the moment. Ethan closed his eyes, cursing under his breath as he pulled the phone from his pocket. The caller ID flashed: Marcus - URGENT.
Ethan answered, stepping back into the shadow. “What is it, Marcus?”
Clare watched Ethan’s face harden, the warmth evaporating into pure ice within seconds.
“Where was it published?” Ethan demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous snarl. “How many outlets picked it up?”
He listened for another ten seconds before hanging up.

“What happened?” Clare asked, a cold knot of dread forming in her stomach.
Ethan looked at her, his eyes filled with fury and anguish. “Julian Vance just leaked a smear article to the Richmond Gazette. He claims that an unlicensed dance instructor has coerced a mentally impaired Henry Caldwell into signing private checks, and that you are an opportunistic gold-digger manipulating my family for financial gain.”
