Chapter 13 - Unmasking the Deception and the Race Against Time

The silver Porsche roared through the streets of Richmond, slicing through the morning fog at breakneck speed.
Ethan’s phone was connected to his dashboard. “Marcus! Trace the document delivery from last night!”
“I already did, sir,” Marcus’s voice came over the speaker, frantic and urgent. “The document Clare received was an old template draft our junior legal team prepared on Wednesday before you ordered them to stand down! Julian Vance’s assistant intercepted it from the hotel business center, forged your sticky note using a sample from your charity gala program, and delivered it to Ms. Morgan to ensure she would leave you!”
Ethan hit the steering wheel in fury. “Get our public relations team on the line right now. Call a live press briefing at the Willow Creek Community Center.”
“Sir, what are you going to do?”
“I’m going to do what I should have done the moment I met her.”
Ethan pulled up to the Willow Creek Community Center at 10:15 AM.
The parking lot was packed. Word had spread of the gala’s triumph, and four local news crews had gathered outside the studio doors, hoping for an interview with the woman who had danced with the state’s most elusive billionaire.
Ethan parked on the curb, ignored the flashing cameras and the shouting journalists, and pushed through the double doors.
Inside the studio, Clare was packing boxes.
She had changed back into her faded dance sneakers, black leggings, and a gray oversized sweater. Her eyes were red and swollen, but her posture remained straight and dignified.
When the studio door slammed open, Clare looked up.
Ethan stood in the doorway, breathing hard, his hair disheveled, his dark coat damp with morning mist.
“Get out, Ethan,” Clare said, her voice trembling as she taped a cardboard box shut. “I have nothing to say to you. Your legal team can send the paperwork to my lawyer.”
“There is no paperwork,” Ethan said, walking toward her, his long strides closing the distance between them. “The contract was a fake, Clare. Vance intercepted an old discarded draft and forged my note.”
Clare froze, her hands hovering over the packing tape. She looked at him, her hazel eyes searching his face for any sign of deceit. “A fake?”
“I never wanted you to sign a non-disclosure agreement,” Ethan said, his voice dropping into a desperate, emotional plea. “I never wanted to buy your silence. I wanted to give you the world, but I was too stupid and terrified to tell you why.”
“Why, Ethan?” Clare asked, tears spilling over her eyelashes.
Ethan stopped two feet in front of her. He reached out, his large hands gently taking hers, pulling her away from the boxes and into the center of the open wooden floor.
“Because I am in love with you,” Ethan confessed, his voice echoing through the silent studio. “I have spent fourteen months living like a ghost in an empty house. I thought my life was over when my mother died. But the moment I saw you teaching my father how to laugh again, my heart started beating. And when I held you in my arms, I realized that I don't want to live another single day without you.”
Clare looked up at him, her chest heaving, the pain of the past twelve hours melting away under the burning sincerity of his storm-gray eyes.

“You’re an impossible man, Ethan Caldwell,” she whispered, laughing through her tears.
“I know,” Ethan smiled, his face radiant with hope. “Teach me how to be better.”
