Chapter 11 - The Traitor in the Family

A customized armored truck rammed through the metal doors at sixty miles per
hour.
It smashed directly into two mercenary jeeps, flipping them over.
The engine roared like an enraged beast.
From the truck’s roof turret, Marco opened fire with a heavy caliber machine
gun.
Concrete walls disintegrated.
Vaneau’s mercenaries scattered into the shipping container aisles.
“Take cover!” Vaneau screamed, pulling a pistol from his coat.
The driver’s door of the armored truck kicked open.
Alessandro stepped out into the smoke.
He wore a dark tactical vest over his burned shirt.
His face was streaked with soot and blood.
His eyes burned with absolute, unyielding fury.
He held an assault rifle in his arms.
He was alive.
My heart nearly burst from my chest.
“Alessandro!” I screamed.
Vaneau grabbed my hair, hauling me backward toward Container Seventeen.
He pressed the barrel of his pistol against my temple.
“Hold your fire, Moretti!” Vaneau yelled over the ringing gunfire.
“One more step and her brains coat this container!”
Alessandro stopped twenty paces away.
Marco ceased firing from the truck turret.
A dozen Moretti family soldiers fanned out, surrounding Vaneau and his six
surviving men.
Alessandro lowered his rifle slightly.
“Let her go, Vaneau,” Alessandro said.
His voice was terrifyingly calm.
It was the voice of a man who had already accepted his own death.
“Drop your weapons, or she dies!” Vaneau screamed, his hand shaking slightly.
Alessandro didn't drop his weapon.
Instead, he looked past Vaneau, directly into the shadows near the container
doors.
“Did you bring her here just to die, Camilla?” Alessandro called out into the
dark.
I gasped.
From behind the corner of Container Seventeen, Camilla stepped out.
She was wearing a dirty trench coat over her torn evening dress.
Her eyes were wild with feverish madness.
“She took everything from me!” Camilla shrieked, pointing at me.
“I was supposed to be the queen of New York!”
“And you threw me away for a filthy French waitress!”
“You sold your own family to a foreign diplomat, Camilla,” Alessandro said cold.
“Vaneau promised me fifty million!” she cried. “He promised we’d run to Monaco!”
Vaneau laughed softly.
“Shut up, you stupid cow,” the ambassador spat at Camilla.
Camilla froze.
“What?” she whispered.
“You were a tool to access Moretti’s security routes,” Vaneau said without
looking at her. “You think I’d share two hundred million with a brainless
socialite?”
Camilla’s face twisted in horror.
She realized she was nothing to anyone in this room.
In that split second of distraction, I made my move.
I slammed my elbow backward with all the strength left in my body, striking
Vaneau directly in the throat.
He gagged, his grip loosening on my hair.
I dropped to the floor, rolling across the cold concrete.

“Shoot them!” Vaneau choked out.
Hell broke loose.
