Chapter 3 - THE BLOODLINE KEY

His grip was firm, but he did not hurt me.

Adrian guided me up the spiral mahogany staircase into his private study.

He locked the heavy brass bolt behind us.

The fire crackled in the hearth, casting long, dancing shadows across shelves of leather-bound books.

He stood behind his massive oak desk.

"Put it down," he said quietly.

I placed the cheap wooden frame on the dark green blotter.

My breath came in shallow, deliberate counts.

"I don't belong to any rival family, Mr. Vale," I said.

Adrian didn't answer right away.

He picked up the frame with surprising reverence.

His thumb traced the initials A & M on the faded paper.

"My little sister Mia drew this," Adrian murmured.

His voice carried a raw ache I had never heard in a man like him.

"Twenty years ago."

He looked up, his dark eyes piercing through me.

"One hour before our family estate was burned to the ground."

A chill ran down my spine.

"I thought your family died in a gas explosion," I whispered.

"That was the story for the papers."

Adrian pressed his thumb hard against the lower right joint of the wood.

A tiny, muffled click echoed in the quiet room.

The bottom rail of the frame popped outward.

A secret compartment opened.

A heavy brass key fell onto the oak desk with a metallic clatter.

It was etched with an intricate crest: a diving eagle clutching a ship’s anchor.

My breath hitched in my throat.

I stepped forward without thinking, my hand flying to my mouth.

Adrian noticed instantly.

His eyes narrowed like a hawk catching movement in tall grass.

"You know this crest," he stated.

It wasn't a question.

My fingers trembled.

"My father wore a silver ring with that exact emblem," I whispered.

"Every single day until he vanished."

Adrian stared at me.

His pupils dilated in pure disbelief.

"What was his name, Nora?"

"Thomas Bennett," I said, a tear spilling over my eyelashes.

"He was an ordinary mechanic. At least... that’s what my mother told me."

Adrian’s face drained of color.

For the first time since I entered his service two years ago, the untouchable mafia king looked shaken.

"Thomas wasn't a mechanic," Adrian said, his voice husky with emotion.

He picked up the brass key and held it out to me.

"He was my father’s most trusted captain."

Adrian stepped closer, looking at my hazel eyes with sudden clarity.

"He pulled me out of the burning house when I was seventeen."

My chest tightened so hard it felt like cracked glass.

"He told my mother he had to leave to keep us safe," I breathed.

"He gave his life to protect mine," Adrian confessed.

He looked down at the brass key.

"I spent ten years searching for his family to repay the debt."

"I was right here," I said, my voice cracking.

"Working in your kitchen."

"Because my cousin Grant hired the staff," Adrian growled, his eyes darkening with sudden fury.

"And Grant told me Thomas Bennett’s bloodline had been wiped out."

A cold dread settled heavy in my stomach.

Before I could speak, the glass of the tall bay window shattered into a thousand razor-sharp shards.
