Chapter 15 - THE QUEEN OF PHILADELPHIA

Six months later.

The summer sun flooded through the high, arched windows of Vale House.

The heavy, dark velvet curtains had been stripped away forever.

Every hallway was filled with fresh white lilies, sunlight, and open windows that let the sweet pine breeze roll through.

The Wells crime family was completely dismantled.

Vincent Wells and Grant Mercer were sentenced to three consecutive life terms at ADX Florence with no possibility of parole.

The criminal empire had been transformed.

The shipping terminals were transferred legally into the Bennett-Vale Foundation, funding community clinics, housing, and schools across Pennsylvania.

I stood before the full-length mirror in the master bedroom.

I wore an off-the-shoulder gown of pure ivory silk, hand-embroidered with delicate lace.

My hazel eyes glowed with peace.

My hair cascaded in soft, dark waves past my bare shoulders.

No longer a maid hiding in the shadows.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

Adrian stepped inside.

My heart skipped a beat, exactly as it had the first day I saw him.

He wore a bespoke charcoal tuxedo with a crisp white shirt, his dark hair neatly combed back.

The scar on his shoulder was hidden beneath fine wool, but the look in his eyes was entirely mine.

He walked across the hardwood floor and wrapped his strong arms around my waist from behind.

He buried his face into the crook of my neck, inhaling deeply.

"You take my breath away, Nora," he murmured.

"You're not supposed to see the bride before the ceremony, Mr. Vale," I teased, leaning back against his broad chest.

"I make my own rules in this house, Mrs. Vale."

He turned me in his arms.

He pulled a small velvet box from his pocket.

Inside lay a delicate platinum pendant.

Set within the glass was a tiny, preserved sliver of the pine wood from the cheap frame, resting beside a miniature portrait of my father smiling in his mechanic's uniform.

Tears welled in my eyes.

"Adrian..." I choked out.

"Thomas Bennett walks with us today," Adrian whispered softly.

He fastened the chain around my throat.

Downstairs, the grand ballroom was filled with four hundred guests.

Not mobsters with hidden weapons, but honest union leaders, community organizers, and loyal friends.

The heavy oak doors opened.

I walked down the white carpet on the arm of Marcus, Adrian’s most loyal security captain.

At the altar stood Adrian.

He didn't look at the crowd.

He didn't look at the city outside.

He looked at me as if I were the only light in an endless universe.

When I reached his side, he took my hands.

His grip was warm, steady, and unbreakable.

We spoke our vows before God and the city of Philadelphia.

"I take you," Adrian vowed, his voice ringing clear and strong, "as my equal, my shield, and my heart."

"I take you," I answered, "as my partner, my protector, and my home."

Adrian leaned down and pulled me against him, sealing our marriage with a deep, passionate kiss that made the entire ballroom erupt into deafening cheers.

Later that evening, after the music faded, we stood together on the grand balcony overlooking the glittering lights of Philadelphia.

Adrian handed me a glass of sparkling water, smiling warmly.

"Seven heiresses wanted the empire," he chuckled, his arm resting securely around my shoulders.

I leaned my head against his chest, listening to the calm, steady rhythm of his heart.

"And all I wanted was a memory on a wall," I smiled.

Adrian kissed the top of my head, looking out over the city that bowed to us both.

May you like

"And you ended up with everything."
