Chapter 5 - THE STRIPPED RING

|
The descent into the estate’s private wine cellar felt like walking into the depths of a fortress under siege.
Centuries-old limestone walls dripped with moisture, the air smelling of aged oak, cold earth, and iron.
Enzo Moretti was strapped to a heavy wooden chair beneath the single pendant bulb swinging from the vaulted ceiling.
His expensive Italian leather jacket was torn, his left eye swollen shut, and blood trickled from his split eyebrow.
Two armed Moretti soldiers stood behind him like statues, their tactical rifles resting across their chests.
Standing in the far corner, flanked by Marco, was Vanessa Bellini.
Her red silk dress was wrinkled and stained with damp grime, her diamond necklace dangling loosely against her collarbone.
When the heavy iron door groaned open, Enzo’s good eye snapped toward the entrance.
Luca stepped into the dim light, having discarded his suit jacket and rolled his black shirtsleeves up to his elbows.
The dark tattoos of black roses and coiled serpents on his forearms seemed to ripple under the harsh light.
He pulled a low wooden stool across the stone floor, the screech of wood against limestone making Vanessa flinch violently.
Luca sat down directly in front of his cousin, resting his forearms on his knees.
“Hello, Enzo,” Luca said, his tone chillingly conversational.
Enzo spat a mouthful of dark blood onto the floor between their shoes.
“You’re too late, Luca,” Enzo wheezed, a desperate, broken sneer twisting his bruised lips.
“The Bellinis have already moved their assets across the border.”
“By tomorrow morning, the Chicago Commission will recognize Salvatore as the sole port authority.”
“Salvatore doesn't have an authority anymore, Enzo,” Luca replied calmly.
He pulled a thin manila envelope from behind his back and tossed it onto Enzo’s lap.
“These are the wire-transfer receipts from your offshore account in the Bahamas.”
“Six hundred thousand dollars deposited forty-eight hours before Julianna’s car went into the water.”
“Transferred directly from Vanessa Bellini’s personal trust fund.”
Vanessa let out a sharp, choked gasp from the corner, pressing her hands against her mouth.
Enzo’s arrogant sneer evaporated into sheer, unadulterated panic.
“She told me it was just an extraction!” Enzo pleaded, thrashing against the leather straps binding his wrists.
“Salvatore told me they were just going to hold Julianna in a safehouse in Wisconsin until you signed the dock concessions!”
“She grabbed the steering wheel, Luca! I swear on our grandmother’s grave, Julianna fought me for the wheel!”
“She tried to crash the car into the concrete barrier to stop me from taking Oliver!”
Luca’s chest rose and fell in a slow, agonizing rhythm.
He closed his eyes for three seconds, letting the image of his brave, desperate wife fighting for their child burn into his soul.
When he opened his eyes, there was no mercy left in his blood.
He stood up, walking past his bound cousin without another word, stopping two feet from Vanessa.
Vanessa fell to her knees on the cold limestone floor, weeping hysterically, clutching at the fabric of his trousers.
“Luca, please! My father forced me into it!” she begged, her mascara running in black streaks down her cheeks.
“He said if I didn't marry you, the family would go bankrupt!”
“Julianna was going to expose our smuggling lines to the federal prosecutor!”
Luca looked down at her with a disgust so absolute it silenced her sobbing.
He reached down, taking her left hand in his firm, unyielding grasp.
With cold, methodical precision, he pulled the six-carat emerald engagement ring from her third finger.
The ring had belonged to his great-grandmother in Sicily.
He tossed the priceless jewel onto the damp stone floor, letting it roll into the shadows like a piece of common trash.
“You are not a Bellini anymore, Vanessa,” Luca whispered, each syllable striking like an executioner’s axe.
“And you are certainly not a Moretti.”
“Marco.”
“Yes, boss?”
“Contact Special Agent Miller at the FBI Organized Crime division.”
“Deliver Enzo, Vanessa, and the wire receipts to their headquarters on Dearborn Street.”
“Tell Miller that the Moretti family has provided the evidence to put the entire Bellini syndicate in federal prison for life.”
Vanessa screamed as the guards dragged her backward across the stone floor, her red dress shredding against the rough limestone.
Luca turned his back on her cries, his mind already moving beyond the vengeance of the past.
