Chapter 13 - THE COVENANT OF LOVE

|

The tears spilled freely down my cheeks, warm and sparkling in the afternoon sunlight.

There was no hesitation in my mind.

There was no doubt in my soul.

“Yes, Luca,” I whispered, dropping to my knees on the stone floor beside him so our eyes were level.

“A thousand times, yes.”

Luca let out a long, ragged breath of pure, triumphant joy, his handsome face breaking into a radiant smile that washed away twenty years of pain.

He took the ring from the velvet box and slid it onto the third finger of my left hand.

The cool platinum settled against my skin with effortless perfection, the diamond and sapphire stars catching the sunlight like a captured constellation.

Luca wrapped his powerful arms around my waist, pulling me against his broad chest, and his lips met mine in a deep, passionate kiss.

The kiss was fierce, tender, and filled with an unbreakable promise that sealed our past, present, and future into one sacred covenant.

From the entrance of the rose garden, a loud, joyful cheer broke through the quiet air.

Oliver came running down the gravel path, holding his wooden horse high in the air, his face glowing with pure, unadulterated happiness.

“She said yes! She said yes!” Oliver cheered, throwing his arms around both of our necks as we laughed together on the stone floor.

Luca scooped Oliver up with one arm while keeping his other arm locked securely around my waist, pulling us both into his heart.

“We’re a family, Oliver,” Luca declared proudly, kissing his son’s cheek.

“A real family, forever.”

Three months later, on a radiant Saturday morning in late July, the estate was filled with the music of celebration.

The private chapel on the grounds was decorated with thousands of white gardenias, lilacs, and eucalyptus branches.

Two hundred guests—loyal dockworkers, hospital staff, community leaders, and family elders—filled the wooden pews beneath the stained-glass windows.

At the front of the altar stood Luca, looking breathtaking in a bespoke black tuxedo with a single white rose pinned to his lapel.

Beside him stood Marco, serving proudly as his best man, his rugged face beaming with tearful pride.

The church organ began the swelling, majestic chords of the wedding processional.

The heavy oak doors at the back of the chapel swung open, and the entire congregation rose to their feet in unison.

Walking down the aisle as the ring bearer was Oliver.

He wore a miniature black tuxedo identical to his father’s, but pinned securely inside his jacket, resting directly over his heart, was the tiny embroidered white star from his mother’s sweater.

He proudly carried the velvet pillow bearing our gold wedding bands, smiling brightly at the guests.

Then, I stepped through the arched doorway on the arm of Don Falcone, who had insisted on walking me down the aisle in honor of my courage.

My wedding gown was a masterpiece of hand-embroidered French lace and ivory silk, flowing behind me in a majestic cathedral train.

As my eyes locked with Luca’s across the chapel nave, the two hundred smiling faces blurred into soft watercolor.

I saw only the man who had knelt on the floor to comfort his son, the man who had taken the fire to protect my life, and the man who had given my soul a permanent home.

Don Falcone placed my hand into Luca’s large, warm palm, smiling up at him with deep, paternal respect.

“Cherish her, Luca,” Falcone whispered.

“With every breath God grants me,” Luca replied with solemn, sacred certainty.

We stood together before Father Thomas at the high altar, exchanging vows of loyalty, honor, and boundless devotion before God and our family.

When Father Thomas pronounced us husband and wife, Luca lifted my lace veil with trembling, reverent fingers.

He looked down into my eyes with a love so vast, so profound, that it felt like an eternity compressed into a single heartbeat.

“You are my life, Emily,” he whispered.

He pulled me against his chest, his lips capturing mine in a kiss that sealed our redemption forever.

The chapel bells began to peal across the estate, their joyful music ringing out over the blue waters of Lake Michigan, announcing to the entire world that the house of Moretti was finally blessed with peace.
