Part 4: The Mother's Reckoning

Marcus looked around wildly, realizing the walls of his carefully constructed reality were collapsing. He looked at Sylvia’s father, who was already dialing his legal team. He looked at the security guards, who were now slowly advancing toward him, not to protect him, but to remove him.

Finally, he looked at his mother.

"Mom," Marcus pleaded, falling to his knees, trying to grab her hands. "Mom, please. You have to help me. I’m your son."

Eleanor looked down at him, her expression completely devoid of the warmth and unconditional love she had given him his entire life. She looked at the man she had raised and realized she didn't know him at all. He was a stranger. A predator dressed in a tuxedo.

She pulled her hands away from him, leaving him grasping at empty air.

"I lost my son three years ago," Eleanor said, her voice breaking, not for the man in front of her, but for the lie she had lived. "The day you told me he died."

Eleanor turned her back on Marcus. She walked down the center aisle, her expensive heels clicking against the marble, and stopped in front of Elena and the little girl.

Tears streamed down the older woman's face as she dropped to her knees again, bringing herself to eye level with the child. She reached out, her hands trembling, and gently touched the stuffed bunny.

"What is your name, sweet girl?" Eleanor whispered.

"Maya," the child answered shyly, hiding slightly behind her mother's leg.

Eleanor looked up at Elena, seeing the fatigue, the illness, and the sheer, impossible strength it must have taken to track Marcus down to this exact moment.

"Elena," Eleanor said, her voice thick with emotion. "I am so, so sorry. I didn't know. I swear to you, I didn't know."

"I know you didn't, Eleanor," Elena replied softly. "He told me you hated me. He told me you never wanted to see us again."

May you like

Eleanor closed her eyes, letting out a sharp, agonizing breath as the full extent of her son's cruelty washed over her. She opened her eyes, a fierce, protective fire igniting within them. She stood up and wrapped her arms tightly around Elena and Maya.

"You are my family," Eleanor declared loudly, ensuring every person in the room—especially Marcus—could hear her. "And from this moment on, you will never want for anything again. I will spend every cent of my fortune making sure you and Maya are taken care of."
