Chapter 10

They sat in the kitchen for hours, the conversation flowing easily. They did not talk about Julian, nor did they speak of the court trial or the tragedy of the past. Instead, Audrey shared news of her new life.
She had moved into a small, bright apartment in the city, close to her new job at a graphic design firm. She spoke of her colleagues, her art, and the simple joy of having a space that was entirely her own.
"It’s small," Audrey laughed gently, "but the windows face east. I get the morning sun every day."
Clara listened, a deep sense of peace settling over her. Seeing Audrey whole, happy, and independent was the greatest comfort she could have asked for. It was proof that the pain of the past year had not been in vain.
As the evening approached, casting a golden, amber light across the kitchen table, Audrey stood up to leave. Clara walked her to the front door.
“I’m glad I came,” Audrey whispered, hugging Clara one last time. “I needed to know that Oakhaven Springs could still feel like home.”
Clara stood on the porch, watching Audrey walk down the steps to her car. She drove away, her car disappearing into the golden sunset at the end of the street.
Richard came out to stand beside Clara, his arm sliding around her waist. They stood together in the cooling evening air, watching the sky turn to shades of purple and dusk.

The path to healing had been long, and the scars on their family would never fully fade. The silence in the house would always hold the memory of what had been lost. But as Clara closed the front door and walked back into her quiet, peaceful kitchen, she felt a profound certainty.
Love did not require lies to survive. The truth, no matter how painful, had cleared the ground, leaving them with the only foundation truly worth building upon.
