Chapter 15 - The Final Gift on the Quiet Shoreline

Late that evening, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the Long Island Sound in brilliant shades of rose, amber, and gold, I drove out to the private shoreline behind our Greenwich estate.
I walked down the stone path to the wooden bench overlooking the water where Lucia and I had sat together on a thousand quiet evenings over forty-three years.
The salt breeze was gentle. The gentle rhythm of the waves lapping against the rocky shore brought a deep, profound stillness to my soul.
I reached into my coat pocket and pulled out the small leather-bound ledger.
I opened it to the very last page. Beneath the final banking certification stamped by the Treasury, Lucia had written a short, handwritten note that the forensic auditors had left untouched:
“Arthur,
If life was a building, you were the grand roof that touched the sky, and I was the earth beneath your feet.
I never needed you to give me wealth, my darling. Having your love was the only fortune I ever wanted.
Live well. Build bravely. Be at peace.
Yours forever,
Lucia.”
I held the book against my chest and closed my eyes, letting the cool evening wind wash over me.
For the first time in an entire year, the heavy ache in my chest was gone. The betrayal had been answered with justice. The greed had been washed away by truth. And the empire we had built together stood stronger, purer, and more enduring than ever before.
I looked out across the shimmering water, where the last rays of sunlight danced like diamonds across the waves.
“I love you, Lucia,” I whispered into the evening air. “Thank you for saving me.”
A gentle breeze rustled the autumn leaves above my head, carrying the faint, sweet scent of lavender on the wind.

I smiled, stood up from the bench, and walked back up the stone path toward the warm lights of home.
