Chapter 10 - Blood Money and the Offshore Paper Trail

Pandemonium broke out across the Greenwich Country Club ballroom.

Reporters who had been invited to cover Sergio’s corporate announcement rushed toward the stage, their cameras flashing in blinding bursts of light. High-profile investors who had backed Sergio’s private equity firm scrambled to their feet, shouting demands for answers.

“Sergio! What did you do with our capital?” one prominent hedge fund manager yelled from the front row.

“Is Apex Horizon insolvent?” another screamed.

Sergio backed away toward the rear exit of the stage, his eyes wide with animal panic. “Valerie! Call our lawyers! Call Harrison at the firm right now!”

Valerie was frozen in place, staring at the giant screens displaying the forensic audit. The documents clearly showed her electronic signatures on dozens of illegal offshore transfer authorizations.

“Dad...” Valerie choked out, tears of terror finally spilling down her cheeks. “Dad, please... I didn't know the extent of what Sergio was doing! He manipulated me! He told me we were just protecting your taxes!”

Agent Miller didn't hesitate. She stepped forward, pulled Valerie’s hands behind her back, and clicked a pair of steel handcuffs around her wrists.

“Valerie Vance-Morales,” Agent Miller stated loudly. “You are being detained as an active co-conspirator in federal financial fraud and embezzlement.”

“Get your hands off me!” Valerie shrieked, struggling against the cuffs as the cameras flashed relentlessly. “Do you know who I am? Dad! Tell them to let me go! I’m your daughter!”

I looked down at her, my heart heavy with grief, but my resolve unshaken.

“You stopped being my daughter the moment you threw your mother’s memory in the trash and plotted to lock me away in a home,” I said quietly.

Meanwhile, Sergio bolted for the backstage service door.

He threw the heavy metal door open, expecting to reach the parking lot, but slammed directly into the armored chest of two FBI tactical officers waiting in the corridor.

Within three seconds, Sergio was forced down onto the concrete floor, his expensive designer tuxedo scuffed and torn. An agent pressed a knee into his back, pulling his arms behind him and snapping the cuffs shut with a sharp, echoing click.

“Sergio Morales,” the arresting agent recited calmly. “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

As they dragged Sergio back through the ballroom in full view of the four hundred socialites and business titans he had spent years trying to impress, he lost all composure.

“Valerie did it!” Sergio screamed hysterically, thrashing against the agents’ grip. “She gave me Arthur’s private security codes! She told me her father was too stupid to notice the missing millions! She planned the whole thing! Don't pin this on me!”

Valerie looked at her husband, her face twisting in pure horror and betrayal. “You coward! You disgusting, lying parasite! You promised me we’d own everything!”

“You’re both going down!” Sergio shrieked back as they were hauled toward the front exit. “You’re both going to rot in federal prison!”

The room watched in stunned silence as Greenwich society’s most glamorous young couple was escorted out into the flashing red and blue lights of waiting federal police cruisers.

I stepped back to the center of the podium.

The ballroom was dead quiet once again.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” I said, my voice steady, calm, and resonant. “Vance Commercial Real Estate remains fully solvent, fully operational, and under my direct command. And starting tomorrow morning, the Moretti-Sloane Sovereign Trust will be deploying two hundred million dollars into public education, historic preservation, and community housing across this state in honor of my late wife, Lucia.”

The silence held for one heartbeat, two heartbeats—and then the entire ballroom erupted into a thunderous, standing ovation.
