Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Ambush and the Freezing of False Assets

The following Monday morning, the annual executive shareholder gala of the Vanguard Hospitality Group was scheduled to take place in the Grand Crystal Ballroom of the downtown headquarters. It was an event attended by the city’s top business leaders, civic officials, and institutional investors.
At ten o'clock sharp, the double mahogany doors at the back of the ballroom were pushed open.
Natalie Vale and Eleanor Hollingsworth strode into the room, both dressed in couture black gowns, their heads held high. Beside them was a middle-aged attorney in a pinstripe suit carrying a thick leather briefcase.
Natalie had spent her last remaining credit reserve on professional styling that morning, determined to make a grand, dramatic entrance. She believed that with enough media and public pressure, Arthur would be forced to settle behind closed doors rather than risk a public scandal at his flagship corporate event.
“Excuse me!” Natalie announced loudly as she walked down the center aisle toward the executive stage, where thirty corporate board members sat around an elevated horseshoe table. “I am Natalie Vale, daughter-in-law of Arthur Vale. We are here to deliver an emergency petition to the board of directors regarding the unlawful seizure of family assets and the protection of the Vale family heirs!”
The ballroom went quiet, though several board members exchanged weary, knowing glances rather than looking shocked.
Natalie reached the foot of the stage, her lawyer stepping beside her to present the papers. “Mr. Chairman, my husband Ethan Vale has been unlawfully disenfranchised from his family holdings, and my children are being held under coercive guardianship. We demand an immediate executive hearing before this board!”
The microphone at the center of the stage clicked on.
A man stepped out from the executive lounge behind the podium, holding a cup of coffee. He wasn't wearing a tuxedo or an extravagant designer suit—just his signature charcoal blazer, crisp white shirt, and polished boots.
Arthur Vale.
Beside him stepped Deputy Attorney General Thomas Sterling and three senior investigators from the State Economic Crimes Bureau.
“Mrs. Vale,” I said into the microphone, my voice reverberating effortlessly through the massive sound system. “You’re late.”
Natalie’s eyes widened slightly, but she quickly masked her shock with righteous indignation. “Arthur! You can't intimidate me with your corporate cronies! We have filed an emergency injunction! The press is waiting outside this building right now!”
“The press is indeed outside, Natalie,” Thomas Sterling spoke into the secondary podium microphone, adjusting his spectacles. “However, they are not waiting for your press release. They are waiting for the press conference regarding the twenty-four-count criminal indictment issued forty-five minutes ago by the grand jury against Apex Horizon Capital, Mason Hollingsworth, and Eleanor Hollingsworth for systemic wire fraud, money laundering, and grand larceny.”
Eleanor let out a sharp, choked gasp, clutching the edge of a banquet table for support. “What?! Me?! I had nothing to do with Mason’s business!”
“Your offshore shell company in the Cayman Islands was the final destination for one point eight million dollars of embezzled Vanguard logistics capital over the last thirty-six months, Mrs. Hollingsworth,” Sterling replied coldly. “Two uniformed officers are waiting in the lobby to take you into custody.”
Natalie spun around frantically to look at her attorney. “Do something! Tell them this is illegal!”

The pinstripe-suited attorney took two hasty steps away from Natalie, raising his hands in surrender. “Mrs. Vale, you informed me this was a civil dispute regarding an estate trust. You did not disclose that you were under active criminal indictment by the State Attorney General. I am withdrawing as your counsel immediately.”
Natalie stood frozen in the center of the grand ballroom, stripped of her lawyer, stripped of her family’s false prestige, and surrounded by the very business elite she had spent her life trying to deceive.
