Chapter 4 - The Fortress of Glass and Guilt

County General’s forensic wing moved with military efficiency once they saw my badge and the severity of Blake's injuries. Dr. Evelyn Reed, a seasoned medical examiner and a longtime colleague, personally oversaw the intake. By 11:30 PM, we had high-resolution digital photographs, an official medical report detailing contusions, a minor cervical strain from being shoved, and a clear medical opinion confirming that Blake’s injuries were consistent with offensive blunt-force trauma from an adult assailant.
With Blake safely tucked into the back seat of my personal truck—which I had swapped at the precinct while an officer transported my cruiser—we drove through the gated community of Oakridge Estates. The towering wrought-iron gates were open, guarded by private security who recognized my vehicle and hurriedly raised the barrier without question.
The Vance residence was a sprawling modernist monument of glass, limestone, and arrogance. Lights were blazing across the second floor. In the driveway sat Graham’s silver Mercedes, parked haphazardly across the stone pavers, alongside my ex-wife Laura’s white Porsche.
"Stay in the truck, Blake," I said, locking the central doors and handing him my backup phone. "Keep the engine running. If you see anyone approach, hit the horn."
"Dad... be careful," Blake said softly.
"Always," I replied.
I walked up the sweeping limestone steps, the rain dripping from the wide architectural overhangs. I didn't ring the doorbell. I used the heavy brass knocker, pounding it against the solid oak door three times with concussive force.
Within seconds, the door swung open.
Laura stood in the foyer, wearing an elegant emerald evening gown, her hair pinned up for the gala she had clearly just returned from. Her eyes were rimmed with mascara streaks, and a crystal glass of wine trembled in her right hand. Behind her, standing near the grand floating staircase, Graham was pacing with an ice pack pressed against his own knuckles—no doubt trying to create a fake injury after the fact.
"David!" Laura gasped, taking half a step back. "What are you doing here at this hour? Graham told me... he told me Blake attacked him and ran away into the night!"
"Is that the fairy tale he sold you between sips of champagne?" I said, stepping across the threshold without waiting for an invitation. The immense foyer echoed with the heavy thud of my boots.
"Get out of my house!" Graham shouted from the stairs, his voice echoing off the twenty-foot ceilings, though he took a deliberate step backward, keeping the handrail between us. "You're trespassing, David! Laura, call the private security gate right now!"
"Shut up, Graham," I said without even looking at him. I locked my eyes directly onto Laura. "Where were you at eight o'clock tonight, Laura?"
"I was at the Children's Hospital Benefit," she stammered, clutching her wine glass to her chest like a shield. "Graham called me in hysterics, saying Blake had a violent breakdown, that he threw a laptop at him and ran out. Graham said he went to the police to protect our family!"
"Your husband beat our son in his bedroom," I said, each word landing like a sledgehammer. "He punched a sixteen-year-old boy in the face with enough force to fracture his cheekbone if the angle had been two inches higher. Then he took him to his pet sergeant at the West District precinct to file a fabricated police report so Blake would have a criminal record and no one would believe him."
Laura’s face drained of color. "No... no, Graham wouldn't... Blake has been rebellious lately, David, you don't know what it's like living with him—"
"I have the forensic medical report from County General in my vehicle," I cut her off, my voice cold with disgust. "I have photographic evidence of the contusions, the split lip, and the handprint bruises on his shoulders. Blake is sitting in my truck right now, terrified of his own mother because he knows you traded his safety for this glass cage."
Laura looked over at Graham, her lips parting in horror. "Graham... did you touch him? You told me Blake slipped on the terrace!"
"He's lying! Both of them are trying to extort me for a larger custody settlement!" Graham screamed, his face turning an ugly shade of crimson. "The kid is a delinquent! Look at his grades! Look at his attitude! I gave him everything! A private school, credit cards, a room bigger than David’s entire apartment!"
"You gave him bruises, Graham," I said, taking two slow, deliberate steps toward the staircase. Graham flinched, retreating up three steps. "And tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM, Judge Morrison is signing an emergency temporary restraining order against you. If you come within five hundred yards of Blake, his school, or my residence, you will not go to Interrogation Room C. You will go straight to a maximum-security holding cell."
I turned back to Laura, who was beginning to shake, tears cutting clean lines through her foundation. "Pack his clothes, his textbooks, and his personal belongings. You have twenty minutes. Anything you leave behind, I will send a police escort to collect tomorrow."

"David, please... he's my son too..." Laura sobbed, reaching out a hand, but dropping it when she saw the unyielding granite in my expression.
"You gave up the right to call him your priority the moment you let this monster lay a finger on him," I said quietly. "Twenty minutes, Laura. The clock is ticking."
