Chapter 12 - The Grand Jury and the Smug Defense

The morning of the emergency bail and grand jury hearing arrived with blinding clarity. The city courthouse was swarming with media vans, reporters, and citizens who had gathered after the local newspapers published front-page exposes detailing Graham Vance’s corrupt municipal empire.
Blake sat beside me in the waiting room outside Courtroom 402, dressed in a clean navy suit I had bought him the day before. The swelling on his face had begun to fade into a light yellow bruise, but his split lip was still visible—a clear, undeniable badge of his survival.
"You ready for this, son?" I asked, resting a hand on his knee.
Blake looked up, his jaw set with a courage that made my chest swell with pride. "I'm ready, Dad. I'm not afraid of him anymore."
The heavy double doors opened, and the bailiff announced that Judge Morrison was taking the bench.
We walked into the courtroom. Sitting at the defense table was Graham Vance, wearing a new navy suit provided by his high-powered defense team, led by Arthur Sterling—a notorious, silver-tongued corporate defense attorney known for getting corrupt billionaires off on technicalities. Graham looked clean-shaven, but his eyes were sunken, dark bags hanging beneath them from two nights in the county jail.
When Graham saw Blake walk in beside me, he tried to glare at him with his old, menacing arrogance. But Blake didn't flinch. He held Graham’s gaze until Graham was forced to look down at his legal pad in discomfort.
Judge Morrison, a formidable, no-nonsense jurist with thirty years on the bench, slammed her gavel down with thunderous authority.
"This is an emergency bail review and preliminary indictment hearing in the matter of the State versus Graham Vance," Judge Morrison announced. "Mr. Sterling, I have your motion for immediate bail release based on your client's standing in the community."
Arthur Sterling stood up, buttoning his jacket with practiced confidence. "Your Honor, my client is a pillar of this city, a philanthropist who has donated tens of millions to our infrastructure. The charges brought against him are the result of an orchestrated smear campaign led by a vindictive ex-husband who abused his police authority to fabricate a domestic incident out of a minor family dispute. We request immediate release on personal recognizance."
"The State may respond," Judge Morrison said, turning toward the prosecution table where Assistant District Attorney Marcus Vance (no relation) and I stood ready.
"Your Honor," Marcus stated, stepping to the podium. "The State submits Exhibit A: fully authenticated, offsite cloud-mirrored surveillance footage captured from inside the defendant's own residence."
Marcus pressed a button on the media console. The massive courtroom projector screens lit up.
The video played in high-definition clarity. The entire courtroom watched in stunned, horrified silence as Graham Vance’s drunken, raging voice filled the room, followed by the undeniable visual of him slamming Blake against the wall and delivering the brutal blow to his face.
Gasps echoed through the gallery. Several jurors on the grand jury panel covered their mouths in disgust.
Graham turned white as a sheet, frantically whispering into Sterling’s ear, but Sterling looked at the screen with rising dread, realizing his defense had just been obliterated in thirty seconds.
"Furthermore," Marcus continued, "we submit the sworn depositions of Elena Rostova, the unsealed ghost ledgers detailing systematic bribery of police officers and school administrators, and the certified confession of former Sergeant Miller, who has agreed to a full plea deal implicating Mr. Vance in multiple counts of public corruption and felony obstruction."
Judge Morrison’s expression hardened into pure granite. She looked over her glasses at Graham Vance with absolute contempt.
"Mr. Sterling," Judge Morrison said, her voice dripping with ice. "In my thirty years on the bench, I have rarely seen such an overwhelming, sickening mountain of evidence presented at a preliminary hearing."
"Your Honor, we—" Sterling began, his voice cracking.

"Save it, counselor," Judge Morrison banged her gavel with concussive force. "Bail is hereby DENIED. The defendant will remain remanded in custody at the State Correctional Facility pending full trial on all twelve felony counts. Court is adjourned."
Graham Vance let out a pathetic, strangled wail as two armed bailiffs grabbed him by the arms, clicked heavy steel chains around his waist and wrists, and dragged him through the secure side door toward his new reality.
