Chapter 14 - The Forty-Year Sentence and the Final Severing

On Thursday afternoon, following less than forty minutes of jury deliberation, the court reconvened for the final sentencing hearing.
Judge Patricia Holloway looked down from the bench with grave, unyielding authority.
“Mr. Daniel Harris,” Judge Holloway began, her voice echoing off the high wood-paneled walls. “In my thirty years on the bench, I have rarely witnessed an individual who combined such profound predatory sociopathy, greed, and calculated cruelty against the very person he vowed to protect.”
Judge Holloway adjusted her glasses, looking directly at the trembling defendant.
“You attempted to engineer a slow, agonizing execution under the guise of an accidental medical tragedy to steal an inheritance. You treated a human life as an insurance commodity.”
Judge Holloway struck the sound block with her heavy wooden gavel.
BAM.
“For the crimes of Attempted First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Kidnapping, and Torture, this court sentences you, Daniel Thomas Harris, to FORTY-TWO YEARS in the Illinois Department of Corrections, to be served at Menard Maximum Security Correctional Center, without the possibility of early parole;
“Orders the complete liquidation and forfeiture of all your personal assets, real estate, and accounts, with one hundred percent of proceeds awarded as civil restitution to Emily Harris;
“And grants an immediate, permanent LIFETIME ORDER OF PROTECTION prohibiting any contact, direct or indirect, with Emily Harris and Claire Harris forever.”
BAM.
The courtroom erupted into emotional, weeping applause.
Two armed sheriff’s deputies hoisted Daniel Harris to his feet, turning him toward the holding cell door.
As he was dragged away in chains, Daniel turned his head and looked at Emily one final time.
He saw no hatred in her eyes. He saw no fear.

He saw only the cold, beautiful, unshakeable indifference of a woman who had completely removed him from her universe.
The heavy steel security door slammed shut behind him, sealing the predator away in the dark forever.
