Chapter 9 - Public Humiliation at the Carolina Gala

Richard Vance, a pompous, silver-haired attorney who had made a career out of defending Carolina trust-fund boys from the consequences of their recklessness, stepped into my office with a forced smile that reeked of condescension.

He wore an expensive seersucker suit and carried an alligator-skin briefcase.

“Jessica, my dear,” Richard began, extending a manicured hand that I pointedly ignored. “It’s a tragedy that things have devolved to this level between family. Truly a tragedy.”

I remained seated behind my desk, Julian standing quietly by the window with his arms crossed.

“Richard,” I said evenly. “You have two minutes to state your business before security escorts you to the curb like your nephew.”

Richard’s smile tightened, his eyes darting nervously toward Julian Ruiz.

“I’m here to propose an amicable family resolution,” Richard said, setting his briefcase on the leather chair. “Luca is willing to withdraw his civil wrongful termination claims against the board and execute a full, uncontested divorce settlement.”

“How generous,” I remarked dryly. “And what does Luca expect in return for this extraordinary sacrifice?”

Richard cleared his throat, pulling out a single sheet of paper. “A one-time severance disbursement of five million dollars from the corporate reserve, the title to the Lake Norman property, and an official press release stating that he stepped down voluntarily to pursue private equity ventures.”

Julian let out a sharp, incredulous laugh from the corner of the room. “Richard, what brand of scotch did you drink with lunch today? Because you clearly aren't operating in reality.”

Richard’s face flushed pink. “Mr. Ruiz, this is an internal family matter! If Jessica forces this into public litigation, the Vance family name will be dragged through the mud. The social fallout at tomorrow night’s Carolina Heritage Gala will be catastrophic for everyone involved!”

I leaned forward, resting my chin on my hands, looking directly into Richard’s eyes.

“Richard,” I said with chilling clarity. “The Carolina Heritage Gala is tomorrow night at the Mint Museum. Luca was scheduled to be the keynote speaker, wasn't he?”

Richard blinked, caught off guard. “Well... yes. He’s been on the program for six months.”

“He won't be speaking,” I said, opening my desk drawer and pulling out an official engraved invitation from the gala committee. “The museum board voted unanimously this morning to replace him. I am delivering the keynote address on urban revitalization and ethical corporate governance.”

Richard’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. “You... you can’t do that! The Vance family has sponsored that gala for thirty years!”

“The Vance family name was only respected because my father built the foundations of this city, Richard,” I said coldly. “Your nephew embezzled forty million dollars, stole from his own employees' retirement funds, and committed federal wire fraud with Julian’s estranged wife.”

Julian walked over to the desk, towering over Richard Vance.

“Tell your nephew that if he steps foot inside the Mint Museum tomorrow night, federal marshals will serve his indictment in the middle of the ballroom in front of every television camera in North Carolina.”

Richard grabbed his briefcase, his hands trembling with indignation and panic. “You’re making a grave mistake, Jessica! Luca still has powerful friends in this state!”

“Luca has no friends, Richard,” I said, pointing toward the door. “He only had enablers. And their credit just ran out. Get out of my office.”

The following evening, the Mint Museum in Uptown Charlotte was transformed into a glittering palace of crystal chandeliers, black-tie attire, and high-society intrigue.

Hundreds of Charlotte’s elite—bankers, real estate moguls, politicians, and philanthropists—gathered in the grand atrium, sipping vintage champagne and whispering eagerly about the scandal that had rocked the city over the last seventy-two hours.

At 7:45 PM, a sudden murmur rippled through the grand foyer.

Luca Vance had arrived.

He was wearing his best tuxedo, though it hung slightly loose on his frame, his face pale beneath a heavy layer of bronzer. He had managed to slip past the outer perimeter by using an old VIP pass, desperate to stage a public comeback and convince his former investors that he was still in control.

“Good evening, Senator,” Luca said, forcing a broad, theatrical smile as he approached a group of prominent political donors. “Don't believe everything you read in the morning papers. A minor administrative dispute with the board, nothing more. I’ll be announcing my new development venture tonight.”

The senator looked at Luca with cold, uncomfortable silence, took a slow step backward, and turned his back on him entirely.

Luca’s smile faltered. He turned to another group of banking executives, but they dispersed the moment he approached, leaving him standing completely isolated in the center of the marble atrium.

Suddenly, the house lights dimmed, and the chimes sounded to announce the keynote address.

A spotlight illuminated the grand stage at the front of the ballroom.

The Master of Ceremonies stepped up to the microphone. “Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we are honored to introduce the visionary who has shaped our skyline, the newly appointed Chairwoman and CEO of Vance Architecture & Development Group—Jessica Vance!”

The room erupted into thunderous, standing applause.

I walked onto the stage, dressed in an elegant midnight-blue velvet gown, my head held high, radiating absolute poise and confidence. Julian Ruiz stood near the front row, clapping with a proud, warm smile on his face.

Luca stood frozen in the shadowed aisle at the back of the room, staring at the stage with wide, bloodshot eyes.

I adjusted the microphone, looking out over the crowd of five hundred influential leaders.

“Good evening,” I began, my voice echoing crystal-clear through the grand hall. “For years, architecture has been defined by the structures that rise above the ground. But true strength is never found in the polished glass or the grand speeches given on the top floor. True strength is found in the foundation—the integrity of the materials, the honesty of the design, and the courage to tear down what is rotten so that something truly enduring can be built.”

The crowd erupted in another wave of enthusiastic applause.

Luca couldn't take it anymore.

His narcissism, fueled by desperation and humiliation, completely snapped. He broke past the velvet ropes and stormed down the center aisle, screaming at the top of his lungs.

“She’s a fraud!” Luca shrieked, pointing wildly at the stage. “She stole my company! I built Vance Capital! She’s nothing without me! Look at her! She’s an imposter!”

The entire ballroom went dead, horrified silent.

I didn't flinch. I didn't step back from the podium. I looked down at Luca with calm, unshakeable pity.

Before Luca could reach the stage steps, four burly federal agents in dark suits stepped out from the side wings, accompanied by two armed Charlotte police officers.

The lead agent grabbed Luca’s arm, twisting it behind his back with practiced efficiency, while the second agent slapped a pair of heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

The sharp click-clack of the metal echoed through the silent ballroom.

“Luca Vance,” the lead federal agent announced in a loud, booming voice that carried to every corner of the museum. “You are under arrest pursuant to a federal indictment for wire fraud, money laundering, and commercial embezzlement. You have the right to remain silent.”

The entire ballroom erupted into gasps, flashing cameras, and stunned murmurs.

Luca thrashed against the agents' grip, his tuxedo jacket tearing at the shoulder as they forced him to his knees on the marble floor.

“Jessi!” Luca screamed, tears running down his face in front of the entire Carolina elite. “Jessi, tell them to stop! You’re my wife! You can’t let them do this to me! Jessi!”

I looked down at the man who had tried to throw me out of my own life.

May you like

“Take him away,” I said softly into the microphone.

The federal agents hauled Luca to his feet and dragged him backward through the grand doors, his pathetic screams fading into the night as the entire ballroom rose once again to give me a roaring, deafening ovation.
