Chapter 7 - Chloe’s Desperate Scramble for Survival

While Luca Vance was being publicly evicted from the Vance Capital Tower, Chloe Ruiz was enduring her own special kind of hell in a cramped, two-star motel room near the Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
Her designer suitcase sat open on the cheap polyester bedspread, overflowing with wrinkled silk blouses, expensive shoes, and jewelry boxes that were rapidly becoming useless.
Her phone was ringing incessantly.
She lunged across the bed and snatched it up, praying it was Julian calling to say that he had cooled off, that it was all an elaborate test of loyalty, that she could come home to their penthouse.
The screen displayed the name of her personal banker at First National.
“Hello? Mark? Thank God!” Chloe cried, clutching the phone to her ear with both hands. “Listen, there’s been a terrible misunderstanding with Julian’s accounts! My black card was declined at the hotel this morning, and my personal debit card isn’t working either!”
“Mrs. Ruiz,” the banker’s voice was utterly devoid of the usual fawning deference. “I’m calling to formally notify you that all accounts under the Ruiz Family Trust, including your secondary checking and investment portfolios, have been frozen pursuant to a federal asset preservation order served on our compliance department at 6:00 AM.”
Chloe’s heart plummeted into her stomach. “What about my personal savings account? The one with my name on it?!”
“That account was flagged as receiving direct transfers from Vance Architectural Consultants—an entity currently under federal investigation for money laundering,” Mark replied flatly. “The funds have been seized by court order. Furthermore, the lease on your Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon has been terminated by Ruiz Global Logistics. A repossession tow truck has been dispatched to its last known GPS location.”
“You can’t do this!” Chloe screamed into the phone. “I have nothing! I don't even have cash for an Uber!”
“I advise you to retain legal counsel immediately, Mrs. Ruiz,” the banker said coldly. “Good day.”
The line went dead.
Chloe threw the phone against the wall. It bounced off the drywall and landed face-up on the carpet. Seconds later, it buzzed again.
She ran over, dropped to her knees, and checked the screen.
It was Luca.
Chloe answered, her voice trembling with pure venom. “You! You miserable, lying piece of garbage!”
“Chloe! Thank God you picked up!” Luca’s voice was frantic, breathless, and cracking with panic. He was clearly calling from a payphone or a borrowed mobile. “Listen to me! Jessi and your husband have teamed up! They took the building! They froze my accounts! I need you to go to the safe deposit box at the Bank of Nova Scotia branch in SouthPark! The bearer bonds are inside! We can take the bonds, drive up to Virginia, and catch a charter flight to the Caribbean!”
Chloe let out a shriek of hysterical laughter. “You idiot! You absolute clown! Do you think Julian is stupid?! He froze every bank in North Carolina before the sun came up!”
Luca choked on the line. “What? The SouthPark branch too?”
“Everything!” Chloe sobbed, pulling at her hair. “The FBI is involved, Luca! Julian is suing us for federal RICO violations! I’m sitting in a cockroach-infested motel by the runway with eighty-four dollars in cash in my purse! You told me you were worth eighty million dollars! You told me you were going to buy the Peninsula estate outright!”
“I was!” Luca shouted back defensively. “If Jessi had just signed the waiver last night, the equity would have unlocked! It was her fault! She ambushed us!”
“She didn't ambush us, Luca—she outsmarted you!” Chloe yelled, tears streaming down her neck. “You strutted into that house like a king, and she took your crown, your company, your house, and your dignity in twenty minutes! Do not ever call this number again!”
“Chloe, wait! Don't hang up! I have nowhere to go! My family won't take my calls—”
Chloe ended the call and blocked the number.
She sat on the stained carpet, staring at the small mirror above the motel desk.
For eleven months, she had strutted through Charlotte’s high-society charity galas on Luca’s arm, mocking the women who worked for a living, bragging about the lakefront estate she was about to inherit, and treating boutique staff like servants. She had convinced herself that she was untouchable, that her beauty and charm would always insulate her from consequences.
Now, she looked in the mirror and saw the truth.
Her makeup was smeared, her designer dress was ruined, and she was entirely, utterly alone.
A sharp, authoritative knock sounded on the motel room door.
Chloe jumped, her breath catching in her throat. “Who... who is it?”
“Federal Bureau of Investigation,” a stern voice called out from the hallway. “Chloe Ruiz, open the door. We have a warrant for your electronic devices and financial records.”
Chloe’s knees gave out beneath her. She sank onto the floor, curling into a ball as the reality of her new life crashed down upon her.
