Chapter 7 - The Underground Vault: What Isabelle Hid Before Her Final Drive to the School

The darkness of the mansion became my greatest weapon.
Marcus’s men were professional mercenaries, but they were trained for open urban warfare and tactical room clearance—not for navigating a maze of custom-built blind spots, sound-dampening archways, and reinforced corridors that I had designed myself.
I moved along the upper mezzanine, overlooking the grand rotunda.
Down below, four green laser sights cut through the black air, sweeping across the marble floors and marble statues. Marcus Vance was barking orders near the base of the grand staircase, while Julian Sterling lingered in the doorway of the formal dining room, clutching his pistol with visibly shaking hands.
“Spread out in pairs!” Marcus ordered his men. “Check the second-floor suites first! Eliminate the housekeeper on sight. Secure the Romano girls. And if Dominic resists, put two in his chest and make it look like he fought back!”
Two mercenaries—heavy men wearing tactical vests with the red scorpion insignia—began ascending the east staircase, their boots thudding softly on the carpeted steps.
I waited until the lead mercenary reached the second-floor landing.
The moment he stepped past the heavy marble bust of Caesar near the linen closet, I stepped out from the shadow of the drapery behind him.
I didn't fire a shot.
I drove the reinforced butt of the tactical shotgun into the base of his skull with the full momentum of my body. Bone cracked beneath the impact. The man dropped like a sack of stones, unconscious before he hit the Persian rug.
The second mercenary turned, raising his suppressed submachine gun, his night-vision goggles reflecting the faint ambient moonlight.
Before he could pull the trigger, I closed the distance, grabbed the barrel of his weapon, forced it upward toward the ceiling, and drove my Glock’s slide directly into his throat. He gagged, stumbling backward. I spun him around, locked him in a chokehold, and drove him hard into the solid oak railing, disarming him in one fluid motion.
A single, suppressed double-tap to his shoulder took him out of the fight permanently.
“Movement on the east landing!” the mercenary downstairs yelled.
PFFT-PFFT-PFFT!
Suppressed automatic fire chewed into the decorative molding above my head, spraying plaster and splintered wood across the corridor.
I dropped to the floor, rolling smoothly into the service corridor behind the laundry chute.
“Dominic!” Julian’s voice shrieked from below, the calm mask completely shattering into hysterical panic. “You can’t win this! Marcus has fifteen more men surrounding the outer gates! You have nowhere to go!”
“I don’t need anywhere to go, Julian!” my voice echoed through the ventilation shafts, bouncing off every wall so they couldn't pinpoint my location. “You’re in my house! And you’re not leaving it alive!”
I moved rapidly through the inner maintenance passage, descending straight down into the sub-basement levels beneath the kitchen.
The utility tunnels were damp, cold, and lit only by the faint hum of high-voltage transformers.
This was where Marcus had built his shadow server room—the box Olivia had drawn in her crayon sketch.
I reached the reinforced steel door marked ‘HVAC Control 3’.
The lock was an encrypted electronic keycard reader.
I took out the encrypted USB drive Isabelle had hidden in the blue box beneath the dollhouse. The bottom of the drive had a built-in hardware bypass chip—a tool Grace had loaded with custom decryption algorithms.
I inserted the bypass into the reader’s diagnostic port.
BEEP. BEEP. CLICK.
The heavy magnetic locks disengaged.
I pushed the door open, raising my weapon.
Inside the subterranean chamber sat a full tactical command center. Eight high-resolution monitors lined the back wall, displaying live, uninterrupted feeds from every camera on the estate—including hidden pinhole cameras inside the children’s bedrooms, the kitchen, and my private study.
On the central desk lay the physical evidence that would end Julian and Marcus forever:
A bank of digital recording hard drives labeled ‘Romano Surveillance - Blackmail Archives’, along with the original dashcam footage stolen from the Garden City preschool intersection on the day Isabelle died.
I hit the playback button on the dashcam console.
The screen flickered to life.
The high-definition video showed Isabelle’s SUV parked outside the school gates. It showed Vincent Morales stepping out of the driver’s seat, walking across the street, and deliberately waving a hand signal toward a parked black sedan.
Then it showed Marcus Vance stepping out of the sedan, walking up to the driver’s window, and drawing his weapon.
Isabelle fought. She threw herself across the front seats to shield the girls in the back.
And as Marcus fired, the camera captured his face with absolute, undeniable clarity.
My hands shook with a rage so primal, so pure, that my vision blurred with red.

They had recorded their own crime to use as collateral against each other.
And now, I had the entire conspiracy in the palm of my hand.
